Paint Design Dilemma living room

Please help me choose a paint color

Hi there,

I am in the process of painting my living room which faces south. The color of the walls are a beige/cream that clearly has yellow undertones and the room feels dull and even dark.

I have painted samples on my wall with at least 5 paint colors. So far there are 2 colors that I like. SW Modern gray and SW accessible beige. I think I like more SW accessible beige and my husband likes SW modern gray better. Unfortunately the wood trim in my house is making my options limited and I don't want to make yet another mistake.

The couch and the rug are in really good condition but they can go if necessary.

Will the accessible beige bring out the yellow on the wood trim? Is the modern gray too light that it will wash out when the sun hits the living room?

Any thoughts? Thank you!!!

What do the paint colors look like? I'm not familiar with SW since I only use Behr paints. Certain shades of gray look great with natural wood. I painted my foyer and living room with Classic Silver from Behr and it looks great with everything. I personally prefer gray paints over beige. I just checked out your colors and to me, they look very similar, especially on my computer monitor. The gray is not what I call a true gray. Here is what I have on my walls:

The accessible beige is a beige that has gray on it. When there is natural sunlight in the room I like it better than the other color.

The modern gray , I am not sure what undercolors has but it is a light warm gray . At night with artificial light I like how it looks on the wall.

I am not sure what to do.

I'm in agreement with you that for your situation something of low contrast would be best. You could have the shutters more or less match the house color (or even go ligher, say a cream color) or a soft green with yellow tones to it. I would let the landscaping provide the color (and I'm so hoping you're not doing grass in your tropical environment) and let it be the lush counterpoint to your cool-looking light colored house. I think it would be beautiful.

The concepts of color "depth" and "complexity" might be the most difficult to pinpoint and explain. Deeper, depth, complex are words that get tossed around a lot. No one wants a Plain Jane paint color when "complex" sounds like it would be so much prettier and better, right? These descriptions of color are about nuance. Nuance is not the same as LRV. Lightness value (LRV) and grayscale value (usually 10 gray squares) is where most people get confused. And, really, it is understandable. They're both scales of gray squares - but the gray squares are not the same grays. LRV and grayscale are inextricably tied but are distinctly different parts of color that can be measured and plotted separately. LRV is measured by device. Grayscale is a visual assessment. it's only a thumbnail size pic. can barely see anything. I don't mind the gray w/the black, but I'd want to see more black trim (or maybe a dark charcoal trim). something on the dormers. the other advice is landscaping. those large round shrubs do nothing but block your home, (off to the right). I'd remove those and plant some type of flowers or something w/interest. Ditto for the left side. match the gutters to the house color. you don't want them to stand out

What if I were to paint the board and batten plus the wall all the same color? See inspiration below. I know they have the wainscotting going up the entire wall and I am doing only a half wall. Does that matter? I love this light color, but I have cool white floor and white sink. What would look good? Chantilly lace or white dove?

It's really your choice. I'm sure both colors will work well in your room. I just ordered a new paint color for my bedroom and what I did first was buy a sample and tried it out to see how I liked it during that day and night. I love it and I ordered a gallon of it. Once I'm done with the quilt I have been working on, I'm going to paint my bedroom, dark pewter from Behr.
