Help-problem accessing & setting up new Chromebook due to Gmail issue.

I'm in the limited skills spectrum of all things tech, so I hope you can bear with me as I need help! I bought an Acer 14" Chromebook today and am frustrated to tears trying to be able to use it. The problem is that I want to use a gmail account I set up and used only very briefly around 9 months ago. I also have an older gmail account I haven't used for that long, either. I finally found my password log today and was able to access the older account on my Mac, but the password for the newer one isn't working when I tried to sign in on the Acer. (For reasons I don't want to go into I haven't been using any email all these months except for occasionally using my work email, which is not ok. ) The Chromebook set-up seems to be a gatekeeper - not allowing internet browsing it seems without an email set up. When the password failed it asked for the month and year I set up the account, and then required another email address I could access. Twice I tried to get identified by providing the older gmail account so a confirmation number could be sent to me- twice I sent back the number they submitted and each time it said I could not be identified. I sent the email back asking for help this afternoon but they did not respond and I don't know if they ever will. Can anyone offer me any help aside from opening an entirely new gmail account which I really don't want to do??

Also, when I googled gmail on my Mac to try to access the newer account to see if my gmail password would work that way, I didn't even have a chance as the older account pre-populated each time. Can't you have more than one account?? I hope this is clear enough to make sense. Help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would it allow you to move forward if you set up a brand new gmail account now?

If these older ones are so disused that you don't remember passwords, it's not like there's something there to protect or insist on continuing with. Or am I missing something?

Only the newer one's password isn't working - the other I've accessed today. I wanted to use that newer gmail as it is the one linked to here! And I have other reasons for wanting to keep it active. I do not want to have the older, working gmail account connected to the Chromebook for personal reasons. But right now as it is I have a non-functioning new Chromebook. : (

Ok, so if I set it up to the older gmail that I don't really want to connect with it, can I easily change the connecting email account in the future?????

Can't help you with your email. I don't use Gmail or Yahoo anymore, to many problems. If you use FF look for "no squint" in the ad ons. You can adjust the font size there. The icon is always on my add on bar on the bottom, you can change the font size and the back ground color. I love the option to change the back ground color. Right now I have a orange sherbert color for a back ground. It saves eye strain caused by the bright white MS insists on using. The fonts on the tool bars are far to small for comfort. I change that right away when I set up my PC, it is a more stable change. In W 7 right click on the desktop, Personalize, click on window color, then on advance appearance. A menu will come up, click on the area you want the font or background color changed. I like this way better but some internet site fonts are to small and the no squint helps there. On my W 8 computer the font and background color change is under display.

Maybe you could download a bootdisk and make a bootable floppy then you should have access the C: drive. If it doesnt start to a dos prompt you'll need to access the bios and set it so it looks to boot from floppy drive (FD) before Hard Drive (HD). This guy has a boot floppy exe that you download, then insert a floppy before running it and it automatically formats and makes a 98SE bootfloppy. I havent used this, he was first one that turned up in a search. It's hard to believe it wont let you get to a dos prompt. Have a feeling you've a loose wire or connection inside. Definitely get a contingency with a survey that YOU pay for yourself - YOUR survey - and ensure that survey markers are placed so that you can walk around and see it yourself (you may not want to bug the surveyor when s/he is working). Make sure you have all the recorded easements that will apply to you (you may have easement to cross other properties and they to cross yours). And, the difficult part, talk to the neighbors about the informal agreement and find out who makes the arrangements and how the finances are accounted for. They should have something in writing, even if it's an informal email, just to give something to hold on to. I've owned rural property where the dirt road ran along one edge bordering all the properties. The last person on the road had to travel along everybody else's, so everybody needed to maintain theirs in cooperation, so we all pitched in to have it graded about every 2 years and snowplowed during the winter. I believe it was divided evenly although some thought it should be pro-rated depending on how far back you were - how much of the road you used. The other weird thing was that there was some sort of easement that the neighboring ranch could herd their cattle down the road, and back up the road, each year. So we paid for someone to spray down the road before they came to tamp down the dust they would raise. Some good friends live on a private paved road and they complain about the person at the end who runs a business out of their home, which means big trucks are driving down the road multiple times a day. They don't think they should have to pay as much for repaving since one house is causing most of the damage. Just some things to think about when sharing private roads!

I don't know about length of bermuda grass living in soil. That might be a serious problem. I went the industrial route because I am out in the country. If you are as well, this might work for you. I had a local guy with small tractor plow up a 35' X 30' area and then had perhaps one half of a Tandem Dump Truck load of composted cow manure bedding from a local cattle ranch dumped on it. This was 11 years ago just before gas prices doubled. At that time a local trucker who knew the cattle rancher, had the rancher load his truck for $50 and he charged me $50 for the gas and labor so that was $100 for perhaps 15-20 cu yards of compost. When gas prices increased, my neighbor was charged $125 for the trucker to deliver a similar load. Eleven years later, the soil still has some tilth and is reasonably easy to dig in mid spring although more compost is a useful addition. I certainly would not try to dig in wet soil; a totally exhausting approach.

On your mac, you should be able to sign out of your older account (option in top right), and then try to sign in with the newer account.

Regarding the account you cant get into, if the recovery codes arent working, then you’ll likely need to work with google to help reset it. I cant say I’ve had your problems but surely you understand their need to confirm its actually you trying to get into your account.

You can have more than one user account signing into the chromebook. https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/6088201?hl=en. I’m not sure what additional complexities that adds to your experience, but it should at least allow you to get in and use your device.

Thank you Elmer and Steve. Steve, in that link above, it says sign into google. And click on your photo. What am I getting into? I've never had to sign into Google before. I'm a very private person and don't like giving out any more info than absolutely necessary. One of the reasons I've never been involved with Facebook, etc.

You sign into google so you can keep all of your bookmarks, history, and google account info synced between all of your devices. If you dont want to sign in, then just sign out of the gmail page. There should be a “not you” link somewhere. Clicking that will log you out of the old account so you can get into the new one.

I’m not a facebook guy either, but I do use android and google products and syncing my account accross all of my devices works great for me. Your mileage may vary.

Let's take a deep breath and start over. I think for whatever personal reasons you have you've blown this up into much more than it is. It's a "lost password for Gmail" access issue, not a Chromebook one.

The Chromebook wants a Gmail address to reference your connection. Among the reasons why that's necessary is because Chromebook has limited onboard memory and MS Office-type docs - word processing, spreadsheets, notes, etc - use software from and are saved online in Google Docs, to an account tied to a Gmail account. You can work on such projects on any device, save it to your Google Docs account, and then access it from any other device, including the Chromebook. What sets your saved docs apart and limits access is that they key is your gmail account name and password. That tie-in gets set up as the Chromebook is set up.

There are probably other reasons too.

End your suffering by using a Gmail account you can access. Remember for this and all other accounts, use a system (whether on paper, using a password app, a text file, or whatever) that's always available to you and easily accessed so that you can find your passwords and update the list when you change one.

There's no need to send Google a photo, nor to worry about consequences of a privacy invasion. I hope your other aborted efforts with Gmail accounts you've lost the password for haven't poisoned the well to prevent an easy setup of this Chromebook with a working account. If so, call Acer Tech Support to get it straightened out. Good luck.
