Computer is locking up due to not enough memory on start-up

If somebody could help me I would appreciate it. My problem is that I downloaded some firewall and security protection on my desktop computer from EMBARQ - not realizing it would take as much memory as it does - my system is really antiquated and only has 64K of memory and Windows 98. Is there anyway I can bypass this security stuff on boot-up, so I can get to where I need to be to uninstall it? EMBARQ wasn't any help - they said I would have to take it to a professional. I only need to get some files off my hard drive, as I just purchased a new notebook. (This purchase is what started my problems.) Tried getting to SAFE MODE and that didn't work.

Thank you,

Helen

P.S. EMBARQ said I need 256K of memory to run this protection. Even if purchasing additional memory would solve my problem, I would prefer not to have to do that as this system is not going to be utilized once I get my files off it.
