Linus, all my dogs have been able to snack when they are hungry, and leave food in the bowl. I start them when they are puppies with dry food always available. They soon learn that whenever they are hungry, food will be there, so they don't feel the need to eat everything. They are golden retrievers, which are notoriously food driven, but are happily at their ideal weight.

bigredkate: wondrous. I just know dogs who aren't able to leave food in the bowl.

Linus, you have to start them as pups. When I moved in with my husband I checked his dogs bowls, saw they were empty, and filled them up. Result? Two very, very full elderly dogs. I didn't make that mistake with them again! But truly, all the dogs I have raised from pups have been fine with grazing as it suits them. They even share with the local magpies.
