Need help...don't know where to start!
Comments (5)I love your antique trunk - that will certainly help set a country/cottage mood. It's really useful too, since it can be a coffee table or a media stand, or a side table. Also interesting that your sofa back is sort of a reverse Camel back. If it works, I'd like to see the sofa on the wall without windows, so that the straight line of the window sill does not compete with the reverse curve. Your rug is pretty and colors are a close match to sofa, but it is rather small. Would it work in your entry way instead? Remember to make your bench cushion 4-5 inches thick. Right now the only pattern that you have is from the afghans. It will be easier to furnish the room after you introduce a pattern or two. I'd probably start with patterned draperies, because they'll have a big effect. Then you can either choose a subdued rug or layer more pattern. Same with the upholstery for your chairs. I love quilts on the wall, but I think your afghan would probably stretch out too much, so I'd continue to use them as throws instead. As others have suggested, take it slowly - you'll have a better result, and hopefully it's more enjoyable too....See More2nd guessing my granite selection--help
Comments (44)blondelle: I want to thank you so much for all your hard work on these mockups! I do like the warmer mock up and I do think that the warmer travertine gives a French country feel. I actually did pick up some 3 x 6 tumbled marble from Turkey, which is beautiful. It blends in with the paint color that I currently have on the backsplash area. I'm going to have to be careful, though, because things can get too busy, but I agree that too much white in the backsplash can have a washed out appearance. palimpsest: I am going to investigate a quieter option for the countertop, too. Very early on, our local IKEA had a Corian that looked like sand on the beach. Also, I'm attracted to some of the engineered stones, even those stones that have a little sparkle in them. Part of me likes bling! jeanteach: I'm sort of going back and forth between a porcelain tile and natural stone. The beveled brick with the crackle is beautiful. I like the low maintenance of the porcelain tile because we do a lot of cooking in this household. I don't want it to be too washed out, though. gracesantacruz: Who did you use for your countertop fabrication? Would you recommend them? southernstitcher: thanks for chiming in, too :-) OMG will someone shoot me to put me out of my misery? I guess it is good to have options, though. Good news: Lowes refunded all my money for the granite countertop since I was so unhappy with Duracite, so at least I'm off the hook with them now, which is a relief. I went out with a girlfriend today for a short lunch break and we looked at some more options. I came up with an idea of going with a sand-like engineered stone it is called astro pearl by zodiac and then I saw some mini black pebbles that might be nice in a diamond shape, or perhaps some black glass? I'm still torn, I'm afraid and I think it's best for me to step back and take a break for a short while cuz it's a little too hot in the kitchen right now! I guess this how the design process goes and there are so many sides to me, so I'm conflicted arrgh......See MoreHelp! Newly installed white cabinets don't match paint swatch.
Comments (13)Thank you everyone for all your advice and suggestions. I have read each and every one of your posts. thank you- First let me back this up by saying this: My cabinets were initially installed with a sprayed paint on them- a "Pittsburg" paint that my cabinet maker (yes he is old school!- fantastic builder and very nice to work with) had matched up to BM sImply White. Pittsburg is the paint he prefers to use over anything else b/c of it's commercial grade quality. We did not ask for a sample of how the actual color would look but we did however see what a sprayed cabinet looked like. Separately we saw what BM simply white looked like. I guess that's where the mistake was b/c even though it was color matched using a "formula" the cabinets casted a faint lime green tone. The kitchen looked like a "white kitchen" but when you held up real WHITE- you could see a huge difference. SO, without hesitation, our painter took our cabinets down and re primed and sprayed what he could and hand painted the other cabs which had the granite on it. Before he did the "2nd paint", he showed us the white we would be using and asked for approval. It looked white and much better than what was there, so we approved it for our cabinet builder to go ahead and re spray the cabs. Ok- 2nd install- cabinets go it, some look WHITE and others look really off. No consistency. NOT HAPPY!! That's when I wrote my first post on GW. SO, we had our cab guy here today and again, with a great attitude and willing to solve this "white" issue we are having, we decided to talk to the people at BM and do some more research and we are now testing BM Simply white in the ADVANCE. This came highly recommended by the BM people. Apparently the yellowing that you MIGHT see in an oil base is not for YEARS to come- and that's very slight. BUT the oil base paint is the best when it comes to preserving the cabinets from nicks and scratches and with white cabinets, you have to be very careful of that.So with all this being said, my husband and I just held up two painted SIMPLY WHITE BM boards. One on the corner upper and one next to it. BOTH the same white. The one on the curved cabinet is a different color than the one next to it- it has almost and icey bluish tint to it. NOW we think it may be the lighting. So, my husband just ran to Home Depot to get a different bulb for the ceiling light. We will try this before we have our cabinet guy take down everything and repaint!!! I just think white cabinets in our kitchen may just be very inconsistent. Go figure, we have a slew of big windows with natural light and a ton of high hats. this kitchen reno is just part of a huge reno on our house/ gutting and addition- that went smoooooth. The kitchen cabinet part is what's giving us a hard time. going on 5 months without a kitchen. UGH!...See MoreLarge kitchen with separate Butler's Pantry & 2nd Kitchen....help!
Comments (11)Thank you all SO very much for your thoughtful comments and time. I will post some layout pictures here (just met with our Kitchen Designer yesterday again.) We are going on Year 5 of living here this fall, and I have given constant thought as to the space & use since we have moved it. We have had a project going 100% of the time since we moved in due to the original state of the house. Now it's time to upgrade vs "fix". We are overdue! I've toyed around with ALL ideas (removing walls, extending the bar/not pictured-discussed, etc). For the most part, we like the layout and decided the pantry/2nd Kitchen are functional as is, although I love ideas, thank you all for your thoughtfulness. To answer other comments, I don't need 2 Kitchens + Butler Pantry. But that is the existing layout and it's easier to leave as-is than remove any of these large walls or areas, and I do use the space. I don't need 10K sq ft of house either, but it's what we have. (FYI it was a foreclosure we got for $360K on 25 Acres in Rural Indiana; about $100K put in initially to make liveable, and now we are just slowly chipping away at projects). I am going to reuse a lot of these cabinets in a basement storage room & garage. I hate to get rid of them! The Corian should hold up well in the transition too I think. Here is a picture from standing at the Main Island, looking OUT to the rest of the eat-in kitchen. We'll be adding a furniture-style cabinet piece where the additional cabinets are on the left. This bulkhead we may remove. They are big aren't they..? I have no clue what the $-tag would be to remove all of them (this one cheap likely.) I'll get a quote out of curiosity. My gut feeling just says it will be $$..... Just through that hallway to the left is where the 2nd Kitchen & Butlers Pantry are. I can't wait to get rid of this ugly dark red color. Existing Kitchen. Proposed is moving the Fridge from where it is now (right picture, where proposed Wall Oven & MW are - across to other side). Adding 36" rangetop. I can't go much bigger given the space there and existing gas line. We'll be moving our existing GE Induction, Wall Oven, MW to the 2nd Kitchen so did decide to just do 1 Wall Oven + MW in the Main Kitchen. Thanks for your comments on that! You're all right - as we grow/change, we will need that in the kitchen for sure. I was torn on leaving the 48" Fridge in the Main Kitchen, but it helps me avoid re-doing cabinets in the next picture..... as I have a 48" slot with non-working Fridge. Having a 42" and 48" seems to be plenty, vs adding two 48"s. See below. Here is the before of 2nd Kitchen (Please Excuse the Mess - this was previously a child craft room/nanny area). We would paint these cabs and re-do the ugly hood. Existing Wall Oven + old MW would go in here too on the far left replacing that cabinet. And the other side. Little pocket glass door to the bar. Non working 48" SubZero. 2nd Dishwasher, 2nd Trash Compactor, and Sink. Everything in the existing MAIN kitchen will come into here which is nice. No appliance worked when we moved in but I wasn't ready for a full remodel then. But glad to not be wasteful with those purchases. I have always loved the cabinets/style despite being so wood-heavy, so we are just going to paint these to match the main kitchen, new countertops, new backsplash. PROPOSED: And the Butler/WD/Toilet Room. This is on the other side of the Main Kitchen (behind Range/Wall Oven Area). There is a single toilet behind that far wall. And the other side. Here I don't need a 3rd Dishwasher but am struggling to figure out what to do with that space. I could add another Wine Cooler but seems odd to have in the Laundry/Butler area when we have a Bar. Trash Compactor will become pull-out Trash Bin. Ideas for filling the DW space? Again this will be all painted cabs, countertops, backsplash. But see the big bulkhead in here too? I don't want to take that out. We have 6 Bathrooms to remodel in the near(ish) future. I have to be frugal in some areas if I want other areas to pop more. Layout for these 2 pictures: Comments/ideas/suggestions are all ultra welcome. I will put a separate post about some of our semi-final decisions to our next steps in the remodel and would love your criticism....See MoreDLM2000-GW
