I really like the fish scale mosaic. I haven't seen that used in a bathroom before.

Depending on the size of the room, I would use 18 x 18 tiles for the floor, possibly marble-look porcelain tiles. A photo of the entire room would help us give more specific recommendations.

I love the small hex tiles. Looks really nice with your subway tiles, dyh. I agree that the dark grout is much easier.

I have 2" white hex tiles, which would be a bit less grout than the 1" hex. I have less issues with the grout than the white color which shows everything, especially black dog hair (see profile pic), but that said I'd pick the 2" hex again. Sorry I'm having trouble loading pictures!

When you say you're not liking things being so traditional, what do you prefer? More vintage? More modern?

@dhygarden - thank you for posting. Is the 1 inch hexagon difficult to maintain? In the last photo with the standalone tub and shower, what type of chevron or herringbone tile did you use? It’s lovely!

It's natural gray. I like it, but I might have done the grout in the shower a shade lighter if I were picking again. Darker shows more imperfections, which are more visible in the shower at eye-level. But I'm splitting hairs...

Hi - I have 1" hex with medium gray grout (and white 3x6 subway shower walls) in our 1.5 year old master bath, and I think its easier to maintain than the previous 4" square white tile (gray grout): you really don't see the hair/dirt with all the grout lines. I spot clean the floor, and vacuumed it maybe once a month, and it looks clean. Honestly I think it is very forgiving. We used to have black penny tile and you saw everything. We have gray tile in another room - light-ish gray/tan - and I always say "its the color of dirt" - you never see any dirt.

OP You said you aren't loving a very traditional look. I think larger (6"x12" or larger) gray floor tile with matching grout would be great - still traditional, but a modern look as well. And, the color of dirt! You need a good tile guy, however, to have large format - you might end up with lippage if not done well. (I live in a HCOL area where its very hard to get a great tile guy, so I always go mosaic to try to end up with a better installation job.) I have a 1920s colonial home so the look works for me, but I would have gone with - and several friends near me have gone with - large format on the floor of bathrooms (and 3x6 white subway on walls).

Yes, the white small hexagons easily show dirt, so it requires more care. If you used darker grout (I matched the tile), it would be less noticeable.

However, that's my guest bathroom so it gets less use than my powder room (the black/grey marble daisy) and my master bath (porcelain planks).

My tile guy, also my master carpenter who replicated the trim from my 1939 main house to the new addition, was an expert.

I would be hesitant about adding another small scale tile in a geometric shape when you have the fish scales accent. If you really want to do a hexagon, consider a larger format like 8" and match the grout to the tile. I love the large hexes. It wouldn't be my first choice for your bath but it's a better scale than the small hexes, which are very traditional.

I completely agree with Mayflowers. The large hexes look great, and wouldn't look like you have 2 different small tiles, which would be too busy looking.

I completely agree with Mayflowers about not using a small hex with your fish scale. I would consider large format anything over a small scaled tile in a new shape. I was thinking you could go darker too on the floor. Something like the large format tile on the wall of the first image Mayflowers posted but smaller, like 18x18. Someone above mentioned 18x18 floor tile. or 12x24.

That was me who mentioned 18 x 18, enduring. The reason I like large format square tile is it doesn't have a direction to lead the eye like rectangular tile and is very calming and serene. More spa-like imo. Dyhgarden laid her rectangular tiles with squares and it eliminates the directional pattern. This is also a nice way to lay 12 x 24 in a bathroom.

Rectangles and fish scales in the shower are two tile shapes. It really depends on how plain the vanity area will be whether you want to introduce a third strong geometric pattern with the floor. It's hard to make recommendations when we only know what is planned for the shower area.

A Shaker vanity? Will you bring in any modern touches with the lighting, faucet, and mirror? How large is the room? Will it have a tub?

Mayflowers -- my close-up photo makes it look like squares, by my tiles are 12x24 rectangles, laid like the last photo you showed. I agree, it's a good look. My laundry and sunroom tiles are laid that way.

Mayflowers - yes, shaker vanity. Chrome shower fixtures over bathtub. I really wanted a navy vanity, but got white because of the price. I love brass fixtures, so I wanted to mix metals somehow. Maybe brass sink faucet, handles, and wall sconces. I would love to bring wallpaper, but I know that’s not practical.
