Bathrooms Awash in Black and White Tile
Classic, affordable and widely available, this tile combination can veer modern, traditional or eclectic on a bathroom floor
In today's bathrooms, white is the standard choice for fixtures like toilets and baths. When it comes to floor tile design, there is a greater variety of choices, but black and white is always a good bet. The classic combo of ebony and ivory has many advantages: It will never go out of style (unlike, oh, say, the pink and turquoise tiles of the '50s or the avocado ones of the '70s); it matches with any wall color you might choose; it looks crisp and clean; and it is neutral enough that most buyers will like it — or at least not hate it — when you resell your home.
Black and white floor tiles also happen to be affordable and frequently in stock at home improvement stores and tile centers. Plus, there are many styles from which to choose. Here are 10 bathrooms, all featuring black and white floor tile, to inspire your own space.

With hardwood doors, vintage doorknobs and tongue-and-groove wainscoting, this bathroom has a slightly vintage feel, which is enhanced by the black and white hexagon floor tile. Brennan + Company Architects upped the interest by adding a black border around the floor's perimeter.
Black and white feels springlike when paired with a celery-green wall color. This bathroom picks up the motif in the towels and the shower curtain, which are both accented with thin black stripes.
In this modern bath, a timeless hexagonal floor tile is paired with black cabinetry, which is a surprising and contemporary choice for the bath. A light, neutral wall color and white trim keep the room from looking too dark; natural light and a large window also help keep things light and airy.
This bathroom by De Meza + Architects gives black and white a fresh new look with custom mosaic tile.
A classic octagonal tile is the perfect counterpoint to a more modern stripe of mosaic tile in the shower surround in this bathroom by Sustainable Home of Palo Alto, California. Designer Kristen Flynn notes that the mosaic is an affordable option by Dal-Tile.
The combination of subtle black and white floor tile, crisp subway tile and a classic marble-topped sink vanity gives this bathroom a timeless feel. Incredibly, designer Kirsten Anthony Kaplan says the bathroom was done in just a week or two, using mostly materials her contractor had onsite at the house.
Black and white takes a contemporary twist in this design by HighCraft Builders. A floor of mostly white tiles with small dots of black complements the black and white sink vanity, the ebony medicine cabinet and the shower tiles.
This gorgeous claw-foot tub is handsomely surrounded by a black and white floor tile border. The tiling is in a Greek key pattern, and it was likely laid by a tiling professional. A slim border of black pencil liner adds to the theme.
A black and white checkerboard effect lends graphic punch to this bathroom by Goforth Gill Architects. While it is more common to see this style in the kitchen, the look works just as well in the bath.
