Our house inside our greenhouse!
Comments (30)Things are going quite well in our house/greenhouse. WeÂre glad itÂs been a cool summer here in the North East. WeÂre able to keep the greenhouse temps only about 10 degrees above the outside temp. Cabin stays cool  just like any other house, you close your windows/curtains in the morning. Plants seem to be thriving (blossom end rot on tomatoes  weÂve read this common on trellised plants). Bit of an aphid problem (on the hard shelled gourds), maybe IÂll try oak leaves. Now we just let the daddy long legs do their thing Âgood way to spot bug problems (look for the "good bugs" as well as the bad). Trees are doing their job  filtered shade through the morning hours, then starts again around 2:00 p.m. If itÂs a sunny day, we mist and water down the floor (gravel) mid-day. We wrestle with the divide between trying to grow most of our food (a noble, yet lofty goal) and using the space as living space. Next year more space will be allotted for veggie production, but the ping pong table has got to stay. More work to be done (isnÂt there always?)  automatic watering, permanent planting beds, replacing the fountain with a small pond and waterfalls. WeÂve just finished splitting 5 cords of wood for this winter and weÂre already thinking ahead about how to best subdivide the space for overwintering (our aim is to keep the temp at a minimum of 45). All in all, itÂs been a great experience. Here is a link that might be useful: GoodGreen House...See MoreWhere do you put your house number?
Comments (5)I take pictures of houses a lot for contract work I do on the side, and see them posted all sorts of ways. - It looks like you have some rocks around your flower bed you could get a larger rock and stencil them tastefully on it. - You could have a garden sign posted in your flower bed with the numbers as well. I've seen that many times, it's very nice looking. -You could also stencil them on the front of one of your steps with a little applique (spelling?) on each side to frame it. - You could have a larger brass plaque made with your house number on it then hang it centered over the 2 windows on the wall in front of the walk way. - you can stencil paint them on the curb too. -I wouldn't post them to the column though because they look like their on the smaller side and that may look out of place....See Morewhere to place my house number?
Comments (19)Polly, if you place that black sign on the lawn next to your dark brick steps, it will be very hard for anyone to see. The black color combined with your dark brick doesn’t stand out at all. You want the numbers to be visible from your street and that placard on the lawn isn’t going to work....See MoreWhere to put house numbers?
Comments (5)Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I've removed the shrubs and plants blocking the door. We're putting in new landscaping and painting the front door a bright color. I'm not sure about what color to paint the garage door though. I'm still on the fence about the house numbers. My street is not well lit and I'm worried if I put them on the front corner they won't be visible at night. So I was thinking about putting them on the garage below the light. However, it's further from the street and I'm worried about finding numbers that are large enough to be easily seen. I'd love to install a cute address plaque but most of the numbers are only 5" tall....See MoreEquanimity
