Cut out rot or wait and see?

(X-post from C&S - was recommended to post here instead)

So this adenium normally lives outside in gritty mix. When I bought it it had very shapely "buttocks" and legs but it suffered some rot a couple of years ago and I had to cut off a butt cheek which recovered.

Well, I moved it inside on 8/24 in preparation for Hurricane Harvey and it has been in the hot, dark garage since then.

It has developed some rot on the same side as the previous surgery and was a bit soft the other day but has hardened up.

I pulled it out of the pot and cut some kinked roots (it was getting pot bound) with plans to excise the diseased area and repot it but now I am not sure what to do. Nothing feels mushy and I hate to cut such a big section out which might make things worse. Should I just leave it to air out for a few days or should I go ahead and cut the area out?
