So how has everyone fared with winter heating this year?
Comments (33)I haven't a clue as to what percentage of heat may be lost through the floor. All I do know is that if I stand on the uninsulated floor in our otherwise very well insulated and heated detached garage in the deep cold of winter wearing socks and tennies- my feet get really cold. But I can go barefoot on the glazed quarry tile in the GH in the same freezing weather and be comfortable, which is good because I often trudge out there in the early hours wearing only sheepskin slippers, then take them off to prevent soaking them as I splash around, topping off tanks. It could be that the quarry tile is acting as a heat sink, absorbing warmth from the air, then sending it back up? Again, I have no idea. All I do know is that my GH has stayed warm all though one of our worst winters in many years, holding a steady 72 deg. 24/7, on the cheap for fuel. It could also be all of the insulation combined, but we just received a $185.00 gas bill for the entire month of January that in addition to the GH, heated a 2300 sq. ft house, a detatched 4 car garage and fueled a gas WH, dryer, and stovetop burners, and this is is the slow cooked soup season. I can live with that....See MoreEveryone has a least favorite gardening activity....what's yours?
Comments (28)Yup I have a readers digest book from 1978 I was just rereading and low And behold man was going to cause an ice age LOL. In the mean time I think we need to garden and changing weather seems to be a fact of life as does talking about it. He he, back to O P on gardening. I hate to water I put in a square foot garden, Mel's mix and all. I like to use soft water as our tap water just don't seem to work for growing. Well we had a dry year here so I was stuck going to the local lake, no problem except my raised beds needed 2 inches of water a week what a pitb. Whats with that? My small in ground bed needed water only twice in the same period of time (about 6 weeks) twelve times for the raised beds. So what do I hate, watering my garden! curt :-)...See MoreThe fall snake migration has started here!
Comments (7)Thank you for asking. In the fall it is when the snakes begin traveling back to their winter dens from parts far away (and in the spring, of course, it is when the snakes leave their dens and begin traveling to parts far away). Snakes overwinter in the same den year after year and some of them will travel several miles in the fall to return to their dens. Migrations mostly happen in central states like Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, and Kentucky and places farther north where snakes spend their winters in large communal dens in bluff. Farther south snakes can den almost anywhere (a stump, a rodent hole, etc.) and thus they don't den in large concentrations. In some places if you are between a denning bluff on one side and good habitat on the other you can walk along and actually see the snakes migrating. The snakes will all be coming from the flats and heading to the bluffs and all will be on the move in the same direction. On a good day during peak migration you might see as many as 50 to 60 different snakes in a three hour walk. On a more typical day during the peak migration you might see from 12 to 25 snakes in three hours. At the early and late ends of the migration (which lasts for about 2 months) you might see just 4 or 5 snakes. It's really a neat thing to observe!...See MoreSo where is everyone, camping with monkeys??
Comments (14)Hugs to you A B Karen ......gentle ones!!! I'm loafing....been down with the epizootis since July 4th and I'm ready for it to go visit someone else!!! I did take down the kitchen valances and put up my sunflower ones....grapevine garland with slightly fadey goldy colored sunflowers. I always put them up for later in the summer and they look pretty cute. DH bought me some kitchen accessories that have a goldy sunflower on a red background, so I put those out too! Now I am set until fall!! Texas is heating up...we have had it pretty good with lower temps and lots of rain, but I think the REAL THING is about to set in!!...See Morebragu_DSM 5
