Do You Think One Year's bloom Affects The Next Year?
Comments (5)Hi Kay: excellent question. I had wondered this in the past and from observation I know that Mort Morss does an off year/on year cycling. I also have seedlings out of MM which do the same thing. When I say "off" I mean it--literally single digit blooms (and sometimes single blooms if any) per spike. As regards MM, this doesn't seem to be affected whether I set seed on it or not, it just does it. Some of my other varieties do this to lesser degree (MM is definitely on a limited parole with me and I may just give it away next spring). As to virgo45's observation, I'll confirm it as a general rule; there are some plants (Malaysian Marketplace, Finish with a Flourish, Wild Irish, Magyar Music, Palace Garden Beauty and Orchid Elegance) which seem to shrug off the effort of setting seed the previous year and continue to bloom/set seed their heads off in subsequent years. But as a rule, I've noticed much diminished blooming in the year following heavy seed set with bounce back the 2nd year after. -eric...See Morehelp growing out new variety next year?
Comments (3)hi folks -- Thanks so much Bill and Downinmyback... No need to send a SASE -- you're doing me a favor, so the least I can do is pay for postage! Just email me your addresses at emily@hezel.com, and I'll send them along to you! If anyone else is interested, just do the same -- I've got plenty of seeds! Many thanks! Comments (18)Thank you Julia. I bordered that bed with rocks yesterday..Oh my aching back!, and I will post a photo later. I really like it because I love rocks around a bed like that. Julia posted photos of Heucheras on her blog, and I really liked them so added them in a couple of places...I want to add a couple more to this bed. Citrix, the lime green one, is not real easy to find. kay...See MoreA Few New Ones And A Few Repeats
Comments (11)First, a big thanks to all for liking the daylilies. I am going to answer Celeste first about Lillian's Thin Ice. I had to go back in the time machine to find out just when I bought it. It came as an Instant Buy on the Lily Auction from Tink--Michele Taylor-- and it arrived in the fall of 2014. I have checked a few places for availability and was coming up empty, but good news-- I did find it at Shady Rest Gardens. A double fan is listed for $25. I have bought a couple of daylilies from Doris and David Bishop of SRG and received very nice plants. In fact, the major one I wanted was not listed for sale, but they sold it to me--really nice people to do business with. I already have a daylily on reserve for their sale which is coming up in July. Yes, it looks as if this was purple day, didn't realize it until everyone pointed it out. It's too bad about Carmen Renee, I always think of Celeste's picture of it, so beautiful. I know this weather is killing the color on so many of our plants. Glad to get that pic of Susan Weber since it was almost killed a couple of years ago by some strange insects that were in the roots. Now it is better than it was before, go figure. Nancy, to your point about the short scapes on LTI, as I recall, ours put on height every year, so perhaps next year your scapes will be taller, hope so....See Moredick_in_ohio
