replacement for Abe Darby
Comments (10)Just wanted to add that I got rid of Abe due to rust, too, here near Sacramento. I have a Lillian Austin that I wish I could find an in-ground spot for. It is currently in a big pot and happy enough. No suggestions for the colors you are looking for, though. I am assuming you are wanting an Austin rose? If you wanted yellow, I would give a big recommendation for Symphony. It is one of my best roses. Just Joey does wonderful for me, too. Frilly and beautiful. Comments (4)Linda, NC is close enough - I can never figure out if I am zone 6 or 7 - but on no authority whatsoever I figure it will be the usual - a dryish warm October, get rainy and nasty in November, December a bit cold but January and February will be very cold and unpleasant. So my roses will get their rest - but around here I have to get out and Spring prune a LOT sooner than the books say, the roses start budding out early. Just hope no more Easter freezes - that was hard on my plants last year, I only lost one though....See MoreAbe Darby and others
Comments (9)Thank you, everybody! Carol, the only thing I can say about GB is that it is fragrant. It has been sitting in a pot for years with fairly good grace, but it is not my favorite rose (just personal taste) and I have not been very diligent about watering or fertilizing. In other words, any complaints I might have are probably due to neglect. Perhaps with better care it could be a great rose, I don't know :-) Masha...See MoreAbe Darby, Carding Mill, Roald Dahl
Comments (21)Thanks everyone! Deborah — WOW! That first picture, although probably more pink than in real life, shows a beautiful beautiful plant. I really like how upright CM seems. I think I’ll go with it! What a beauty. Roserobin — We have the exact same experience with AD, though you must have had him much longer than I have. I hated him when he’s not flowering as his foliage is never clean for me, but his flowers are just too perfect. I’m definitely keeping mine. Crown Princess Margarita is beautiful too! I already bought an own root one this year and planted her alongside our backyard fence. Heard she’s a good climber! Is yours kept as a shrub or also a climber? nosemeter — yes unfortunately we also get quite some thrips here. My initial few Abe buds were in fact also disfigured so bad that I had to just snap them off. I did spray some Trounce on him afterwards and the thrips seem to be under control for now... Your Abe bloom is absolutely perfect! So rounded. I love it....See Morelavenderlacezone8
