Cheap rose (Abraham Darby) rewarded me and other comments

Thanks again to feedback on forum and other places, I had decided to get an Abraham Darby and incredibly found a "bloomed out" and neglected potted J&P Abraham Darby at Lowes for $10. It had one bud, but I went out today and it has just thrown around 6 brand new buds and looks "perky" - I am really looking forward to this unexpected fall flush! A good freeze would stop that, but around here I don't think we'll see a hard freeze until December - if that. We just had 4 days or so of 90 degree temps - a cool front came through and there was some lightning - but NO rain! It's not as bad as Georgia but Maryland is in drought too - a lot of the corn along the coast fields looks terrible.

It's been so warm many of my roses are sprouting new leaves and some buds - hope it's not like last year when an Abe Lincoln finally grew a beautiful new cane, but it was too fresh and got blasted by a freeze - still is a one-cane wonder now.

Stone_garden, good luck with your Abraham Darby. That rose
gets mostly positive reviews on this forum. It is one of Austin's
best. Hope you don't get a sudden freeze. Enjoy!

That's great you got an Abe Darby...I love mine. I've heard that this winter is suppossed to be mild or very severe. Okay..

Kaye, thanks for answering my question regarding the age of your Abraham Darby. It is so nice, if a rose is allowed to really mature in a garden. It makes such a difference in the overall appearance. Looking at your photos again, all I can say is, I love your garden!

I know this post is older, but for those reading for the first time... Here are my 2 cents. I have a few austins some do okay, sister Elizabeth thrives, but Abraham Darby is a complete flop! I doesn't grow, it dies back every winter to the ground (zone 5), the buds don't open, it has blackspot and rust. I have been waiting 5 years hoping for this rose to perform and have only seen maybe 2 bloom ever on a leafless twig. I have other roses surrounding it that thrive! I would suggest the rose "quietness" as an alternative. Huge, blush colored blooms (not as peachy as Abraham Darby) that smell fantastic. This rose grows tall, has little winter die back and (sitting right next to Abraham d.) has no disease...ever! Quietness

I think I'm going to remove the one by the front door. I'm going to leave the other one in place for awhile (maybe). There's so many other roses that do well here. I sure don't want yuck near my front door, and I don't want to babysit him either. If I go out and remove blooms that look bad, I end up with a giant prickly bush with only a few blooms left. All I had to do was hear one response to get the shovel out to alleviate any guilt I felt about doing so. Hmmmm.....Cramoisi has a nice full bloom, self cleans, gets virtually no disease. Maybe he'd be a good replacement, as long as he will get at least 5 feet tall for me. Or Louis Philippe. Sandy

Great pic of this rose or maybe Evelyn?? lol I have just received my Abraham Darby here in zone 10 in Florida. I ordered an Evelyn also but let that one go to a friend since these 2 roses seem so very close in color. My A.D has bloomed twice and hers just bloomed and I will say they are so alike in color that you could easily mistake the two for one another from what I see in her photo. Evelyn obviously is lighter in color but mirrors A.D. I am getting that Evelyn again this week and they are both grafted on Fortuniana. Would like to hear from anyone who has both and please tell me about your experience in scent and anything else you may want to share? I have seen pics of these two side by side and from what I have seen, they are just about twins. They both have that yellow underneath the petal that is striking to my eyes.

Linda, NC is close enough - I can never figure out if I am zone 6 or 7 - but on no authority whatsoever I figure it will be the usual - a dryish warm October, get rainy and nasty in November, December a bit cold but January and February will be very cold and unpleasant. So my roses will get their rest - but around here I have to get out and Spring prune a LOT sooner than the books say, the roses start budding out early. Just hope no more Easter freezes - that was hard on my plants last year, I only lost one though.

Yeah, lets hope no more Easter freezes. Gardening is not for control freaks I think, or even control wannabee's like me.
