Vinyl replacement window options

We are looking to replace 12 wood framed windows: 9 double hung, 2 picture, and 1 sliding window. We're only looking at vinyl replacements since they're less expensive and low maintenance.

This is the quote from a local contractor which includes removal of the old windows and installation of the new ones (the box stores wanted thousands more for inferior windows):

Sunrise Restoration $6,460

Soft-Lite Pro LS $6,320

Vytex Fortis $5,740

I know both Sunrise and Soft-Lite are quality windows. I'm undecided between the two since the price is so similar. Would love to hear some opinions or people's experience with these windows.

Other details on the windows:
* White Interior, White Exterior
* Energy Star Rated Omega 12 Low E Glass and Argon gas filled insulated glass
* Colonial Contoured Grids on 9 Windows (Match Existing Patterns)
* Polyurethane Foam filled frame on all windows
* Fiberglass Reinforcement in the sashes
* Full Opti-View Screens on all windows
* Wrap / Spray Foam Exterior Window Jambs on Installation
* Clad Exterior window frames with PVC Trim Coil (White)

We were also quoted $3,120 to replace our french door with a ProVia 60"X80" French Door by the same contractor. Not sure if this is the right place to ask but would look people's opinions on that as well - whether it's a quality door or a good price.

Can't really go wrong with any of those. I assume the Soft-Lite is the just the Pro an not the Imperial LS. Not a fan of the weak sill and internal glazing bead on the Sunrise. The pricing seems in range.

+1. I like the Imperial LS the best of that group as well. The Sunrise is a close second for me as it is "prettier" than the LS in my opinion. Todd is correct that it is a bit flimsy on the sill. Not usually an issue if the installer is cognizant of that fact.

I think that you are slightly misguided handymantom. The XL edge (stainless steel) is indeed a solid choice, however composite spacers such as super spacer and the like are an UPGRADE, not a downgrade. Either way, your post is much like a typical of window salesmen in that it focuses on one specific aspect, rather than looking at the performance of the product as a whole. The independently tested thermal and structural performance ratings are truly a sum of those parts, so if you would like to discuss the quality and/or performance of a given product, u-value, air infiltration, design pressure, etc would be the way to do so. :)

To replace the windows with larder units the opeing would need to be reframed and if you go wider then it would need a new header as well. I don't know what type of windows you want to use for replacing the old ones but if you go larger it will involve removing more siding on the exterior an sheetrock on the interior

vic, if you are unable to locate one of the brands that are universally well regarded by pros, my best recommendation would be to take a close look at performance ratings. You can look at window performance the same way you look at mileage and horsepower when buying a car. U factor and air leakage are two big ones... There is a little complexity when it comes SHGC and others as the optimum numbers can vary based on climate, but the these ratings are a great guide either way.

Thanks, Todd. The Vytex quotes did include the exterior color of my choice My understanding is that the original trim will remain, but I may not be clear on the extent of the term "trim" The Marvin quote includes painting One additional issue is the upcharge for laminated glass on the Marvins--$500 per window. Is this reasonable? The Vytex quotes include laminated glass for 3 upstairs windows and any additional laminated glass is only $150/window. I think i would also like laminated glass for my 3 street-facing kitchen windows, so that is an additional consideration. Re whether it worth the money---I really don't have a sense of the aesthetic differences between them. I'm also concerned about reading that the Marvin windows only have a 10 year warranty on the wood, which seems to run counter to the claims that wood windows will last many years. Also, I can't find any air infiltration numbers on the Marvins. The U factor and other specs seem competitive with the Vytex.

If the SL is the Pro, my top choice would be the Restorations. If its actually the LS, then I'd probably choose it over Restorations.

High quality products including the door. Pretty low pricing. Make sure you do homework on the company proposing it. If they are legit, some companies do try to buy business this time of year, win for you. I see vytex down in the dumps like that often, but the sunrise and the Ls are usually much higher
