That’s not great pricing at all, and the window is very average at best. Some better vinyl window options would be Soft-lite, Okna or Sunrise - but they’re not available in all parts of the country.

I can’t tell you what the price should be since I don’t know anything about the styles and options that you’re looking at, as well as the installation details. In addition, window dealers have varying overhead expenses and that can create variances in pricing as well. Best bet is to get a couple more estimates, using better grade windows, and then compare the three.

Without some sizing to show a true comparison, pricing is hard to say. Are you stuck on Vinyl? Personally, I like Andersen or ProVia.

What are you leaning towards for an interior look?

Nothing fancy. Most of the vinyl windows that I have seen are white, antique white or an almond color. We have blinds over our windows, so color isn't important really.

If you are okay with vinyl, there are some great options in that family of materials that should be available to you depending on your area. Based on what appears to be some sales tactics, you might be well served to shop your quote and take a peak at what is available on the open market. Soft-Lite, Sunrise, and Okna are three quick ones that make a great product.

I can't sing the praises of Okna enough. Look at air leakage rates. I went with Okna over Sunrise because of them.

Thermotech would be my step up. That's fiberglass.

Thank you guys so much for everything I have learned about windows today. But most of the post I have been reading for the last three hours are for Northern climates. For North Alabama, (high humidity year round with average winters around mid 40s and average summers around 80s). I want wood interior but cannot decide about aluminum, high grade vinyl or fiberglass exterior. A little concerned about matching existing exterior windows colors to vinyl. Made a mistake on existing and will not do business with them so exact matching is not an option.

Most vinyl windows can be painted any color you want so that is a unique option for the vinyl and/or fiberglass that you may not have with the aluminum.

What area of the country do you live in? Polaris or Kensington would be two other good choices.

vic, if you are unable to locate one of the brands that are universally well regarded by pros, my best recommendation would be to take a close look at performance ratings. You can look at window performance the same way you look at mileage and horsepower when buying a car. U factor and air leakage are two big ones... There is a little complexity when it comes SHGC and others as the optimum numbers can vary based on climate, but the these ratings are a great guide either way.

Marvin and Anderson seems to be the choice around here with exterior aluminum clad; but a few have just installed all fiberglass. (?) I want casement and standard sizes.

In Alabama, you’re going to be quite limited in options. You could probably find Simonton and their 5500, Prism Gold, Prism Platinum would be decent choices when you can’t get better grade products.
