What are the best replacement windows?
Comments (2)Sounds like you have wood D/H windows now. Probably with exterior storm windows. Windows basically come two ways. Either the replacement type that is measured to fit into your existing opening and don't require any additional spin-off work. The other is the New Construction type. They usually have nailing fins because they are installed onto the house sheating thats underneath your top siding. Usually they require new interior woodwork and paint or stain. Sometimes the opening have to be altered for the new constr. window to fit. Then you may have additional outside work - aluminum capping etc. Replacement type are the most economical and the quickest to install. New construction is much more costly and takes more time and materials to do. Two Types! After you narrow down which way you want to go, answer some of Washingtons' questions and you'll have a plan. Comments (1)An important aspect is understanding how they'll replace your windows. The standard practice for old double hung windows is to remove the sashes and place the new window in the old frame. If the double hungs are weighted, will they remove the weights and add insullation to the mullions? If you don't have double hungs really understand how they'll remove and the old window (is it the entire window or just the sash). You'll also want to understand how they will seal (type of caulk...you want 30 yr silicone caulk) the window and cap the exterior. Most of the big contractors have replacement windows down to a t, but the crew can make a huge difference. Comments (4)Yeah. I have the partial double drip cap right now on my windows (only over the window, and then over the whole trim board above the window), and would like to get the full width drip caps for more security. Been watching install videos from Marvin about good practices, and seems like my contractor is on the right page. One issues that arises that I would love an opinion on: my house does not have Tyvek or other wraps close to the windows. Original windows were set and nailed in, and then the cedar wrap put around, and THEN Jumbo D paper installed for the stucco butting up to the trim. When they take the cedar off and the window out, I will have a bare opening with 6" around the perimeter of it with no wrap, or wrap into the opening. Is it worth it, and can they do it in a way to not disturb the stucco, to "wrap" the window opening? Of course they will need to make sure they layer it in a way to ensure proper drainage plane. Is this something I should advocate to be done as well?...See MoreWindow replacement- which windows are the best?
Comments (5)Pics may help us help you but if they are 80's aluminum they will not be thermally broken so I would replace the entire unit. Telling us your region of the country will help us narrow down your choices but series dependent you are already looking at two entirely different products. What material are you thinking? What do you want the windows to look like form the exterior? Interior? What style window do you have now (double hung, casement, etc.)? Who will be doing the install?...See MoreLeslie Dopkiss
