Window replacement- which windows are the best?

Hello, I am having the windows replaced on my home but I have several doubts. I've had several contractors give bids but I am having a hard time deciding:

The house was built in the 80s and most windows have not been replaced. They have metal frame. My dilemma is, do I need to replace the entire window or should i just do the glass? The windows are double-pane and i see condensation on them at times, also, they fog and are dirty from the inside.
Window quotes have included different brands of windows:

TWINSULATOR THERMAL BREAK
Andersen

What brands are best? Of course i am looking for the most energy efficiency.

Pics may help us help you but if they are 80's aluminum they will not be thermally broken so I would replace the entire unit. Telling us your region of the country will help us narrow down your choices but series dependent you are already looking at two entirely different products. What material are you thinking? What do you want the windows to look like form the exterior? Interior? What style window do you have now (double hung, casement, etc.)? Who will be doing the install?

Great feedback. I am in TX, looking at metal, I have single hung windows. The installation will be done by a contractor who is also doing the siding. I was told that because the windows are narrow and tall it is best to go with metal (more stability and more glass) compared to vinyl.

Don't add tint to your windows before you talk to the manufacture about the warranty. Do not base your warranty information from the tint salesman or manufacture. If you want the darkest window, then yes you want Cardinal's 240 Glass. It has a VT of 40 verses the 58 of the 366 glass. I think the downside of 240 is that it has a lower UV rating and the U is off by about .04. Not by a lot but different. 240 glass is used on the beach to meet turtle codes so it has its advantages.

Looks like you have a really large porch off side, I actually like that you plan to connect it off those patio doors out of kitchen/dining area and give yourselves a small private balcony off master not connected to rest. Not sure what your weather is like but ours here does not justify a massive uncovered/unscreened/unenclosed deck (and to cover and screen all of it would be $$$$) and risks becoming more headache than pleasure, so I understand why you don’t want one. Plus the concerns about shading the future walk out basement. I don’t think you need to burn your house down :) I still vote Option 3 after seeing or understanding more of your overall short and long term plans.

The glass package that you have in your current windows is called heat-mirror. As you described there is a plastic film suspended between two lites of glass and that film has failed. I am somewhat surprised that anyone would suggest glass replacement in a sash that was originally configured for heat mirror, especially considering the age of those windows. I would suggest that in the long run the glass replacement option may end up costing you more than the window replacement option, but before you make your final decision make sure that you have several bids to consider.

I'm still mulling over the best window options over here and figured I would simplify my questions to the following four I am still mulling over--keeping in mind I plan to be in my home for decades, so hoping to get a window that lasts! Material--would you recommend vinyl, fiberglass or fibrex for a midwest/broad temperature range climate? Warranty--would a lifetime warranty sway you into an inferior product? Sliders--when it comes to replacing two single-hung windows with sliders--do you think one brand outperforms others in this type of window? Anything to be aware of when choosing sliders over casement...other than the very slight difference in efficiency? Brands--I think I'm down to Window World, Marvin (Essential) or Andersen (100). Which would you choose and why?

Texas I would agree with the aluminum. Look for a Don Young dealer. Look up Ultra Windows as he may be in your area and is a well regarded pro.

Good news is the vendor that recommended Twinsulator windows is a Don Young dealer. Should I request a quote for Don Young windows?
