Back up files for an HP Pavillion p631

I have the above mentioned PC. I purchased it in 2010. A couple of years after I bought it the hard drive crashed. I found a computer repairman and took my PC in along with my back up disks. I can't remember now how much he charged me but basically I paid for a Windows 7. He never did anything with my back up CD's. What was the purpose of having them? I'm realizing now, much later, that I know that I had a CD burner when I bought the machine. All I have now is Windows DVD maker. Is there a way to open up those back up files and retrieve the software that I had.

Sorry, but you need to explain more what you want to do and why you are wanting to do it.

What kind of backup files were these...the operating system or other software or photo files or what?

Are you saying you don't have a DVD burner or player installed in your computer, or just that you don't have the old software for the burner?

Are you saying you have the backup discs and you want to retrieve something from them, or that you want to reinstall the old operating system, or what?

I don't think you have the Model Number correct, is it possibly HP Pavillion p6310 instead of HP Pavillion p631?

It's my understanding that you now have Windows 7 Installed with NONE of the HP Garbage that came on the computer from the factory. You are asking if there is any way to Access the Backup DVD's to retrieve some of the Programs that might be needed, like the CD/DVD Burner Software! I'm about 90%-95% sure you won't be able to access these CD/DVD's in this manner to retrieve this data!

This should be able to Identify you computer and find information pertaining to your computer. You should find Videos here on how to Download and Install this Software!

Ok. Norton can mess up back ups. Win7 Backup- Error. (0x80070002) This works for some, however it involves going directly in to the Windows registry, I don't send users into the registry. Can someone knowledgeable help you to try this? "This problem is due to one or more profiles under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList with missing ProfileImagePath. To check whether you have missing profiles: 1.Open regedit, navigate to the above registry key. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList). Expand the list 2.Click on each of the profiles listed. The first 3 profiles should have ProfileImagePath value of %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\SystemProfile, %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService, and %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService respectively." My hat goes off to both of you as I extend as much kudus as are possible via the internet ! Thank you very very much ! Like I said, I ran the Norton One Click Support, let it do the comprehensive scan and still had the corrupt file. I then did the Chkdisk and after it ran its course, I'm up and running again, no error messages AND Outlook Express opened and is running normal. I did loose all mail in the incoming folder, but I needed to weed that out anyway. Thanks again . Lee

Some versions of windows, maybe its personal settings at set up.. i forget but.... sometimes what appears to the folders contained in Documents are not always actual folders containing files but are magical fake folders called 'Junctions' . They work and act like a folder to us humans, but in actuality they are only special access links to the folder that contains the files which are elsewhere in a real folder. I backed up my documents in vista or maybe xp a long time ago and learned that lesson.... did it right before a reinstall and lost all my pictures because I had forgotten ... Pictures folder in the documents was a junction(imaginary folder)... along with I think the music & videos too. To properly know what is in Documents,, look in your c;\users path. Access will be denied to the junctions there which will have the shortcut arrow on the folders.

"What's the point of a grouchy comment like that." I found her comment amusing, nothing more. On a more interesting topic, updates, I experience hiccups with the monthly Windows updates pretty regularly. Maybe two or three times a year? They usually come around the 15th of the month. Sometimes PCs become sluggish or exhibit odd behavior. There are times when a further update gets pushed out the next day, or a few days later, and these seem to contain fixes. Very rarely, maybe every few years, I find myself rolling back to the previous month's update to let it settle down, and then the subsequent month's update makes everything right again. I always use auto-update for Windows and my main applications, I think doing otherwise is silly.
