Cooking Project for Rainy Weekend

I had copied Glenda's recipe for Arleen's Spoon Rolls, and came upon it, still untried this week. So I bought some yeast yesterday and am all set for our once every 10 years rain storm and will make the batter and one batch then. Still no rain this morning. So I will continue to crochet the baby blanket (that spells out the baby's name) for DILs friend and wait for the storm or urge to bake these rolls. Can't wait to have some hot rolls and butter with maybe a little marmalade.

It's snowing today so DH already made his batch of graham crackers and I've started my 100% whole wheat bread. Love the smell of yeast!

yeah, goofy me just doesn't like that unfinished look, although I have lived with it a long time, at least i didn't destroy it as the cookbook pages would easily come off with some water..no worries. I knew it was older than 1900 but not sure how much older. I like it a lot, begged it off my mom as she has a lot of antiques that i love. No one else in the family really cares other than the value. I love them as I have always had my house done in either antiques or reproductions.

So sorry about your knee, Teresa. Mine are in a state of rebellion, too. Just sore from garden work, though. Hope yours gets all better soon. Had burgers on the grill w/ King Arthur home-made buns, stir-fried green beans and strawberry Jello w/ bananas on Sunday. Yesterday, marinated grilled chicken, chili bean salad, garlic smashed potatoes & Home-made dinner rolls. I tried a new marinade recipe (mustard & balsamic vinegar) that turned out really good & the rolls were made from a recipe I got here on the Cooking Forum. I think it is Lindac's recipe. Anyway, they were delicious. DSII ate one chicken leg and 4 dinner rolls plus more during the night...there's only one roll left this morning (plus a pan of eight that I put in the freezer.) And, yes, it was too darned hot to be baking bread but had to fire up the oven for the smashed potatoes and had some sweet potatoes that needed to be baked. Good luck with your surgery, Annie. HOUSE PAINTING TIP Sometimes it is difficult to visualize the appearance of house colors. What I found helpful is try different color schemes on paper first. If you have a drawing of your house, that's good if it is not too big. Make copies and color the copies.You can experiment: should you use 2 colors or 3? Try out both schemes on paper. When doing this, we found that too many colors was not good. You may find that 2 shades of the same color works for some elements. For example, suppose the prime color was blue-gray. Use a darker shade to outline the house and the lighter shade to cover the wide expanses bordered by the outline. You can play around with window trim. If you do not have a drawing to copy, make an outline sketch. Alternative, take a photo and use software to create an outline image. Convert the photo to black/white and play with the contrast and saturation to get an image that is mostly an outline. Print out copies for coloring.

My husband spent nearly twelve hours smoking/cooking a large pork butt in the Weber yesterday. It's quite an ordeal (in my measly opinion, lol) but he has a system of loading the coals in a long snake that burns along slowly over that whole time. He used apple, cherry, and a bit of hickory wood chips at the beginning for that flavor. The basting sauce starts out thin and very vinegary at first, then more complex as the meat gets closer to reaching temperature. I'm in charge of that part. He has a gadget that keeps track of the meat temperature as well as the temp on the inside of the Weber and sends it to a little unit that he can keep near him inside. It informs him of when he might need to close down the vents in order to reduce the temp. It's the epitome of "low and slow" cooking, that's for sure. We're having it tonite.....friends are coming over for some poker in a bit. The pulled pork is better the second day, I think. I've got slider buns, a great slaw recipe with a bit of jalapeno pepper, sweet pickles, chips, and a good green salad. Friends are bringing appetizers and a dessert of some kind. It's been pouring rain here and is unseasonably warm. I've had to run the AC today!

I was going to make chicken and dumplings today, but decided on potato/ham soup instead. Love, love, love soups!

I made chicken soup today. Hubby & I are both nursing colds, his almost gone, mine is hanging on. Hoping the "Jewish penicillin" will be just what the doctor ordered!

On Thursday we hosted a House Concert for a niece who's trying to make a go of the music thing. About 24 poeple we invited showed up for a potluck dinner for which I made a 9 lb stuffed roasted pork loin, 2 casserole dishes of broccoli/cauliflower au gratin, and asian noodles. After which the niece played/sang about a dozen of her songs.

Today for lunch, I used a fair amount of the leftover roast pork loin to make a pot of pork chili using ingredients on hand, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out.

It is arctic here in Chicago, and I am down to 1 quart of lentil soup. I checked the pantry and had 5 bags, ready to go. Freezer has a ham bone and some smoked pork hock. Added some spices, celery, carrots and Swiss chard. The end result is 11 quarts of soup for the shelves.
