Windows 10 comes with anti-virus protection built in, so you don't need a second anti-virus program like Norton. Using both that the same time can cause problems. I have no idea what "Windows Explorer" or why you would have to load it. Windows 10 comes with Edge, which is Microsoft's latest, greatest browser and actually works pretty well and certainly better than Internet Explorer. I couldn't see why you couldn't add Chrome (or any other non-Microsoft browser).

I thought that Ctrl-Alt-Del would bring up Task Manager in Windows 10.

Believe me, I debated on whether to add Norton. I've heard both sides on whether Windows Defender is good enough alone and since I'm ignorant about it all I didn't want to take chances on whether it's good enough. So then I read somewhere that Norton doesn't support Edge so that's why I switched to IE. Since I had the option to add Norton to a new device with no charge, I went ahead with it. This is all so confusing, I'll be glad when I get all these bugs worked out. I still don't know why ctrl alt del didn't get me to task manager and still don't know why the Dell update screwed it up so bad and why the prompt comes up when you're not supposed to use it.

"Windows Explorer" is what the file management window used to be called in XP & Vista. In Win 10 it's called "FILE EXPLORER" and does the same thing. If the OP did load something called Windows Explorer in Win 10...I'd like to know what it is and why it was needed...because it probably was not needed. I wish MS would stop using the word "explorer" for anything because it causes no end of confusion.

I suggest you get rid of the Norton as it may continue to cause problems. It's not enough to simply uninstall it using the Control Panel, as this leaves software and registry remnants behind which can continue to cause problems even after you think it's gone. There is a Norton Removal Tool that the company offers. Here is a link to it:

Ctrl, Alt, Del (should pull up Task Manager. If that doesn't work, try Right Clicking on the Windows Icon (Start Button) in the Lower Left Corner. You should then see Task Manager in the list. Control Panel is also available in that list too!

Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge are both installed on my computer in Windows 10. I can't say whether they are both on your Dell Computer or not (Dell may opt not to load both). To see it Internet Explorer is on you computer:

1. Click on the Start Button.

2. Scroll down to the W's and Choose Windows Accessories (you should then see Internet Explorer)

You can choose to Uninstall Internet Explorer by going to Programs and Features in Control Panel. In the Left Column, click on the Turn Windows Features On or Off. If you remove the Check Mark in front of Internet Explorer and click OK, it will remove IE for you!

Did you install Norton? Dell normally ships with McAfee installed.

Norton is a highly rated security system, Microsoft Essentials isn't. I think it's as simple as that. There are other many highly rated products to choose from too, some are free some aren't. Personally, I've been using Norton for about 10 years and I can't say enough good things about it. It works well, it works with a light touch. The few times when a site or a link I thought was trustworthy turn out to be not so, it never fails to block any attempts at nefarious actions.

Hubby bought it, was supposed to let them know if we wanted the McAfee, he forgot. I didn't bother with it. He was supposed to give them an email address or something to get it started and he didn't. I didn't get any prompts or find anything in it when I fired it up about it already having McAfee installed. So, it sounds like Dell feels like it needs an additional security protection on it regardless of the Microsoft Defender.

I think Brushwork was advising that you remove McAfee if you've installed Norton's. Having two Active Anti-Virus Programs on a computer isn't a good thing. They usually end up fighting with each other thinking the other is a virus. Download the McAfee Removal Tool and run it.

Windows Defender is included with Windows 10. It's not Microsoft's intension to stop you from purchasing a Good Anti-Virus product such as Norton's. Windows Defender will Disable itself if it detects another active anti-virus program such as Norton's, McAfee, etc... Microsoft's intension was to make sure Everyone had some kind of Basic Virus Protection. Many people think they don't need or just don't know they need an Anti-Virus Program. Microsoft is making sure these people are somewhat protected, keeping the rest of us a just bit safer!

From what I've read, Microsoft Defender is a little better than Microsoft Essentials. I'm not exactly sure of the differences, you'd have to do some research on that one yourself!

I've given up on using both Norton and McAfee, as they have managed to bog down several of my computers; and I have helped friends remove them from theirs who were having the same type of problems. I have been using the free version of Avast for the last 5 years and no longer have these problems.

I think the primary reason that Dell includes a commercial antivirus on their computers is that they collect a marketing fee for doing so.
