E-mail the photos to your self from the 98 machine to your new laptop.98 could be difficult to get all that burning stuff working, this may prove to be easier for you.

You can upload the photos to "Photobucket" That's a web site then on the laptop you can get them that way by going to photobucket. or use a flash drive on the 98 although usb can be a pain on 98..So you have options here you can try, With out worring about buring software.

If you dont want to network them which would be the fastest transfers - If they both do have instant messaging... maybe, a simple drag and drop.

An old HP system should have Roxio v4 or v5 on it. The application is very easy to use if you do have it. It would take about five minutes to learn.

The e-mail suggestion though viable would create a little extra work for you. You would have to save each attachment to your HD from the e-mails.

The email might not be the best option, depending on your connection. If you reduce the file size of the picture, you reduce the quality of the image.

They have really inexpensive USB drives out now. I bought a 1GB drive for $14. You just drag your pictures over until it is full, then drag them into your MyPictures folder on your new computer. It is reusable - just delete them off after you have them transfered and do it again until you are finished.

A CD will hold less than a 1GB USB drive. Large USB drives are available.

Hopefully you don't have thousands of pictures on your computer - I have 10's of thousands!

Make sure you learn how to use your burner and back up your photos soon - hard drives fail, no matter how new the machine - you are on borrowed time if you do not backup your pictures, and it only takes a few minutes.

Thanks for the ideas. E-mailing to myself and uploaded to Photobucket are not options -- my old pc has dial-up and that would be horribly painful to do. Cable guy is coming Dec 5 but I'd like to move the photos by then.

I did a search for Roxio (entire harddrive) and it is not there.

I think I will have to bite the bullet and by the USB drive. I have not seen them for cheap as $10 but more like $30. Once I get them on my new laptop, burning the CD looks like a piece of cake.

Livvysmom - they have some great deals on them at Target and Wal-Mart - especially now that Christmas sales are going on.

They are very handy to have, and you only need one. I would buy the biggest capacity your budget will allow.

Most photo machines take them now too - so if you want some printed off you can take the USB drive in to the photo machine and select off of it what you want printed.

You could look around for a Flash Drive that is compatible with 98. As noted above by zep516 it could be a pain since you first have to find and d/l the driver. A friend of mine pulled my files and photos off of my old 98 machine, I'll have to ask him what the name of it was.

Thumb drive is a fine solution if it is compatabile with the OS. Before attempting to locate one please determine if you have the original edition of Win98 or the Second Edition Win98. It could make a difference. Before I purchased this Vista system to replace my Win98OE system, I found there was a reoccurring difference in hardware and software compatability.

I saw a PNY 1GB flash drive at K-Mart for $9.99. Now you can't beat that price.

DA is right about the compatability issue. Not all will work in Win 98 original edition.

According to "About Windows" -- I just have Windows 98.

I just had a flashback. A few months ago my niece tried to use her thumbdrive on this PC to print some homework. She said it would not work (maybe that computer would not recognize or read it).

So, is there a driver somewhere I can download?

I don't have a lot of pictures compared to most people because I've only had my camera for a year and half. But, it would be nice to keep the ones I've got.

Just checked the Wal Mart site. They have several 2GB flash drives for less than $20.00
