Restart the computer, keep tapping the f8 key during normal start up, wait till you see the advanced options menu. When you get the menu use the arrow keys to select SAFE MODE with networking. Now try to connect to www.google.com. Please be aware that your Anti Virus program will not be functioning so only try to connect to google. This will tell us if some program is getting in the way like McAfee...

The 0x80070002 Error
While updating windows, it is possible to receive the 0x80070002 Error. As a result the update process will not be completed, and your computer will not be able to transmit files. The reason for your computer receiving the 0x80070002 Error is due to it not having all of the files that should have been transmitted when updating your software. This is an initialization error that occurs after files have been downloaded, and extracted to the computer.

How to Fix the Error
To fix the error manually, it will be necessary to remove all of the files partially downloaded, and try again to update your Windows files.

1. On the Windows desktop, press Start, and when the menu opens up,

2. Press Run, and input the following command "services.msc"

3. In the Run box, type "services.msc", and press "Enter".

4. This will open the "Local Services" window.

5. In the Local Services window find the name "Automatic Updates" and right click.

6. On right click, scroll down and press "Stop". This will cause the Automatic Updates to pause to correct the situation. Do not close the Local Services window.

At this point you can go to the "Software Distribution" folder and delete its contents, or give the folder another name. It is advised that you just rename the folder,

7. To do this go to the Windows desktop and press "Start" then press "Run" when the menu opens.

8. Input the "cmd" command into Run, and the computer will take you to the DOS prompt.

9. At the DOS prompt type in this command "cd %windir%" (without the quotes), and press Enter.

10. You should now be in the Windows directory.

11. At the Windows directory, input "ren SoftwareDistribution SoftDisTemp" and hit "Enter". This will rename the Software Distribution folder to the new name of SoftDisTemp.

12. Type "Exit" and hit "Enter" to close the DOS window.

13. Now go to the "Local Services" window and right click "Automatic Updates" to restart it.

14. Try updating Windows files again.

I think I would try doing a system restore to the time it was working and before anyone started messing with it. See if that helps if not it is always reversible and that is one of the easiest things to try right off.

Using Windows 7 or Vista System Restore

Zep, I did get it booted up in safe mode but still can't connect to the internet.
I got the message "IE cannot displat the webpage" with a big red X on the world icon!
Troubleshooter still will not start either.

I did try a system restore earlier today and got a corrupted files error.

If none of the above help works I think I would return the computer to factory defaults. You say you have copied data back to 'old faithful' so there seems nothing to lose. The computer is so new there is not a lot on there perhaps so the loss might be minimal.

Did you create a set of recovery disks or were disks peovided with the new computer?

I have my Win7 reinstall dvd, the drivers and utilities disc, Dell application disc, sound blaster and Microsoft
Works. They didn't even send a McAfree reinstall disc!

Are you sure you selected SAFEMODE WITH NETWORKING. From the list and not just safe mode?

You might consider using the reinstall disk it will tell you what to do. I just wanted to see if you could establish an internet connection or try a restore from just plain safemode.

Also when you get to the advanced options menu in the list is a line that says "Last known good configuration" try that to...

I know it's a pain booting back to the menu...all the time.

From safe mode I tried the "Last known good config" and everything loaded as usual...but I got the notice to reinstall McAfee. It tried to connect for my desktop weather (Weather Channel) and I got the following:

The control panel still shows the Fire wall settings are being managed by McAfee.

Have not had Norton on the new laptop but I did have Norton on the old computer.

Yeah just like owbist said, and I agree.. to many issues. I am so sorry to hear that on a new machine.

Just a thought might consider getting rid of McAfee. I think it will uninstall after you do the disk thing right from the add/ remove. We could also run the uninstall McAfee tool just to be sure. Then install Avast or something like that.

I am posting this from my new laptop....YEAH!!!

I used the reinstall disk...scary, but I did it. Near the end, it ran ckdsk and found all the corupted files and fixed them.

So now I start over with a very clean laptop.
I have already installed advast!

Tht only problem I'm still having is getting my Linksys to work. Right now I am connected directly to my cable modem.
At least I'm on!

I'll work on the linksys problem tommorow...

Any ideas?

If you have the time post a hijackthis log usually that will provide enough information that McAfee is gone:

· Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
· By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
· Click on Install.
· It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
· Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
· Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
· Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Ha ha, those re-install disks can indeed be scary but you did it, great job. With a computer that new it made sense to go that route in my mind because you had precious little data on there.

After the fact I realised you might have got away with trying System File Checker (Click Start/Run type 'sfc /scannow' sans quotes) which would have corrected any corrupt files.

Now you can enjoy Windows 7

to check for McAfee first go to your add remove programs and see if it shows any McAfee items listed if so choose to remove them from there. You will need to run the McAfee removal tool whether it shows anything there or not since it was on the pc.

these are the full directions for Mcafee removal, I used this exact procedure and it went well and have since shared it with others for their removal.

be sure you use the mcafee removal tool after you have removed it from add remove programs or much will be left behind.
First turn off Mcafee at the icon in the systray.
I had to go into msconfig and turn off all mcafee items from startup prior to trying to uninstall, just turning them off did not work it would say the program was still running. So if you run into this when going to add remove programs try this.

I then removed everything using add remove programs, leaving Security center till last. Then used the removal tool, after that I went to Program Files and deleted all mcafee files. Also set Windows explorer to show all hidden files and folders and deleted the mcafee folders. I found these instructions on how to do this on the mcafee forums.
1. Uninstall all mcafee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported mcafee consumer products using the mcafee Consumer Products removal tool (MCPR.exe). This will remove all mcafee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all mcafee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the mcafee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!

This new laptop is now working fine again but I want to make sure it's OK to clean the registry now, that I have reinstalled Win7.

Hijackthis has trouble with services(023) on windows7 and 64 bit operating systems, Those files are there. Never remove anything from hijackthis unless getting help from a helper.

And never remove a service (023) Entry....
