An Old Condo Kitchen Rises Again With a Fiery Orange Backsplash
Bright colors against a neutral backdrop bring light and contemporary style to a Philadelphia condo
When it was time to do an almost full-gut remodel of an older condo in the Center City area of Philadelphia, these homeowners put a contemporary kitchen high on their wish list. To get the job done, they hired architect Anthony Miksitz and design-build firm Greenable to create a kitchen that fits their modern sensibilities (fiery orange backsplash, anyone?) and blends with the style of the renovated condo.
The custom cabinets are made of naturally finished rift-cut white oak, which Angelo Anastasio of Greenable describes as similar to quarter-sawn oak. The same material forms the facing on the peninsula.
Miksitz chose to leave the doors off some upper cabinets to break up the wall and provide display space for favorite serving pieces and cookbooks.

A massive pullout pantry hides next to the refrigerator. Often-used items sit on the lower shelves for easy access.
The base cabinets feature rollout shelves or Lazy Susans, as shown here.
Square glass tiles make up the backsplash. Custom-painted the same orange that’s on the adjacent dining room wall, they provide a seamless flow of color between the spaces.
Trying to find the right backsplash to fit with the overall design took time. “The general contractor finally said, ‘Just do glass sheets,’ so that’s what we ended up doing,” Anastasio says.

The designers introduced to the dining room new fixtures and furnishings, including a table with stainless steel legs and a bright white quartz top. The console, a piece from Ikea that the homeowners already had, fits in well with the rest of the room.

An orange-and-white palette was the starting point for the streamlined space. A quartz countertop wraps around from the stainless steel refrigerator to the end of the peninsula.
A mix of recessed and pendant lighting provides plenty of ambient and accent light, while undercabinet lighting illuminates tasks. All this is augmented by natural light from two windows in a dining area opposite the peninsula.
