I recently examined an original Eames lounge chair at an estate auction place. It was a verified early model from 1958.

The leather was a bit dulled in finish but still in fine shape. I remember sitting in a brand new Eames lounge chair in 1969 and was surprised that even the cushions in the 1958 chair were still comfortable and supportive.

There is truly NOTHING like the original. Herman Miller makes incredible quality furniture.

I have one, from DWR, a tall version. (I bought it in celebration of being done with the kids' tuition payments.) I did a LOT of research beforehand on replicas vs the real thing. I went in to DWR and sat in both versions (regular and tall) several times and definitely liked the tall better (I'm 5'10" and my husband is 6') and the proportions of the tall took it from nice to perfect. DWR has twice yearly 15% off herman miller - I think one is going on right now and the other is in May. I rationalized the discount this May into splurging on the finishes. I LOVE it. I've only had it since June, but it is extraordinary and amazing quality.

I want one! Bad. Always have. Not in budget right now. I always envision myself having coffee and reading NYTIMES in front of big window with skyline view.

My neighbor in Oklahoma had one I think exactly like the one pictured . I loved to visit and sit in his chair . My next door neighbors here just bought 2 of the stressless chairs that look similar . Theirs cost around the same as than one that . She is tiny and got a small he is extremely tall so he got the extra large. Beautiful comfortable chairs . They got upgraded versions also .

thanks, all. I've sat in a handful of replicas, and I agree -- there is nothing like the real thing. My boyfriend in grad school had a vintage one that was passed down from his grandfather, and I spent many hours sitting in that chair and studying. It was the most comfortable chair I've ever sat in. After reading all the reviews on the replicas vs. the real thing, I think we're going to bite the bullet and spring for a real one, but just trying to find the best deal on one. czarinalex, that ebay site has some really good deals!

MtnRd, ha! I think I need a Controlled Substances Act to go into effect in my house. In addition to sharpies and nail polish, banned items would include glitter (it spilled all over our sofa months ago and I am still finding evidence of it) and hand sanitizer (it bleached a favorite rug). Does anyone have any thoughts on the upgraded leather (MCL) versus the standard contract grade leather? Specificibex, which leather option did you choose?

I got the Edelman All-Grain. Honestly, they all seemed nice, but the All-Grain seemed as though it would wear the best, and I have every intention of having this chair for the long term. The sales associate said one of the other leathers would develop more of a shine (like the classic ones made in the 60's), which I wasn't keen on; I preferred the more textured look of the All-Grain. I can't remember whether the one that would develop more of a shine was the Spinneybeck or the MCL. I opted for the Santos Palisander - the veneer version rather than the oiled. DWR can send you swatches of each of the leathers and of the wood choices.

Rockybird, the womb chair was my other finalist! In the end I felt like the lounge chair was more chair for the money - the craftsmanship seemed more evident. Both classics though!

Totally get the real thing! Someday I will buy one also. But I first I want the womb chair. I love dwr but if you want to save a little money you could order from hivemodern.com. It will save shipping and sales tax. If you are going to buy soon, I would order very soon. I think the HM sale ends monday.

Just found a new, out of box authentic Eames for sale at an auction house. The seller is asking $3,600. The warranty is voided though since I'm buying second hand. Does this sound like a fair price for a second hand chair?

How do you know it's authentic? How do you know it's "new?" Is the seller a known entity? Knoll, etc...

This is a reputable local MCM dealer. I saw it in person. It has the booklet and paper still attached to the legs of the chair but no box. The Eames markings are on both the chair and ottoman.

I wouldn't buy it if you have to pay sales tax. The price with sales tax will be around 4k. At the next 15% off herman miller sale, if you buy from an outside store like hivemodern, you will pay almost the same price (maybe 150 more) because you wont pay the sales tax. You will also get free shipping.

If you do decide to buy it, since there is no warranty, I would offer 3k cash, and see what he says.

We had to cram it in our music room in our rental, but we brought one home today!

definitely buy the upgraded leather. it is much classier and wears better. we have the original chair but with the standard leather which is scratched and the scratches show white. unfortunately, i made a bad decision not upgrading at the time of purchase. now to have the chair and ottoman recovered is over 2k.

tuxthecat, what do you mean by the upgraded leather - the MCL?

you want an aniline dyed leather where the color goes all the way through, not where just the surface is dyed. we have cats and the very minor surface scratches they have made show an ugly white. if the leather were aniline dyed and the black color went all the way through, it would just add "character" and not show a different color and look tacky. It was the sales rep who recommended that because the chair was for home use I didn't need to spend the extra money for a top grade leather. I am distressed that I followed that bad advice because I usually opt for quality and longevity.

@Specific ibex Hello! Can i ask how your all grain leather eames chair has worn? I am about to purchase one and was thinking of this leather, as I also like the pebble textured leather a bit. It did seem like the one that would wear the best over time.
