houses w/o lawns
Comments (29)While I will be the first to agree that a nice lawn of St. Augustine is a thing of beauty grass is still a high-maintenance ground cover, even if it is one that we have come to accept as the suburban standard. A lawn as we know it didn't become the "norm" until the Industrial Revolution when there was opportunity for the masses to copy the English aristocrats with their gardener-maintained swathes of grassy lawns showing they had the money and leisure to not have to plant every speck of ground in food crops. Until that time either a bare, packed-earth yard or a cottage garden was what homeowners had. See, I was paying attention in landscape classes. We have a lawn in the back for the dogs to play on but it isn't wall to wall grass, it's cottage-gardened as much as possible around the edges and the front is being planted with more and more native plants, grasses, and other drought-tolerant plants. We're lucky that we don't have an HOA nor is our code enforcement focused on this (yet). It's a difficult issue as so many people still do invest a lot of themselves in a "nice lawn" but the water problems are catching up with us and attitudes are hopefully changing....See MoreHow do I take these fish oil pills w/o getting fish burps?
Comments (8)This is such a good question, because those burps are really gross. They don't bother me as much as they do my husband. They have almost made him sick before, so he's completely stopped taking them. Have you tried switching to a different brand? I was given some samples from a friend that worked for an eye doctor. They are also used to help people who suffer with chronic dry eyes. I'm sorry I can't remember the brand, but they didn't make me burp at all. DH still wouldn't try them, his experience was too bad with the first kind. So I don't know if it was just me or not. They were gels with the oil inside (like vitamin E). Sorry, this isn't much help....See Morea-fishy, a-fishy, a-fishy-fish...
Comments (33)Oh, all is forgiven, flyleft. I was joshing anyway, although I'd gladly forgo that particular event if not having kids meant I could - not my idea of entertainment! *chuckle* The joys of fibrobrain and pain meds and too little sleep... I just glanced back at the bit above where I said I wished the mammo tech had just taken the relevant parts off to do their thing with them and the King Missile song "Detachable P&n!s" popped into my head, although it was playing in my head as "Detachable B**bies". (Had to look that up, for some reason I thought it was Primus. Not quite my taste in music but I used to work with some chefs who played really weird stuff in the kitchen during prep time. They introduced me to They Might Be Giants - we always played "Minimum Wage" from the "Flood" album just before we opened for the day, synching turning the door key to the whipcrack - so I forgave them a lot.)...See MoreCanned grain-free cat food w/o veggies
Comments (28)I buy Merrick 96% meat canned food to add to the dried food my dogs eat, so seeing your need for a mostly meat food for cats caught my eye. I pay $2 a can for 13 oz or so at our bargain-basement independent pet food store. It is 9 % crude protein, 7 % crude fat, 1.2 % crude fiber, 78% moisture. It does not have the added taurine that cats need, though their cat food does have it. I have no idea what the cat food costs. You might want to look into it, though. I see it does have Guar and carrageenan, though.
