Centipede Grass survives 4 rounds of Round up

I sprayed my yard at the end of winter and early spring with round up. Watered a few times, waited two weeks sprayed again went on vacation came back sprayed again and repeated.

I did 4 rounds of round up. Thought I had killed everything and the salad bar of a yard. It seems the centipede had out lasted the rounds of round up.

I seeded zenith zoysia in April. The zoysia is growing but so is the centipede. Will the zoysia take over the centipede or will the centipede keep spreading and take over the zoysia. How can I get rid of it.

if the grass was dormant when you sprayed it wont kill it. needs to be growing to kill. You might try quinclorac (quin kill). centipede is one of the listed grasses that are not tolerant. it might not kill the centipede, but maybe it would slow it down enough to let the zoysia overtake it. i use quin kill to kill crabgrass and it doesnt affect my zoysia, but not all grasses are as tolerant of it, especially st augustine and centipede, which are listed as "susceptible" on the label. i would wait until you zoysia is really growing well though.

Look at the labels for Weed b Gon and Weed b Gon Chickweed, Clover, and Oxalis Killer. I believe centipede is listed as "do not use" for those. Normal lawn care of watering once a week, mowing high, and fertilizing 3x per year should wipe out centipede. It prefers unpampered care.

Kansasfruiter: I have been using glyphosate around the base of my trees to control weeds and grasses for over 30 years with no problems at all, and certainly no harm to the trees. I don't know what you mean when you say you would hate to kill the grass, since perennial weed grasses like wiregrass are often a major part of the problem around the trees. I apply it at least twice during the season, and if I did not the weeds and grasses would be an ugly mess. Glyphosate (Roundup) stays put right where it is sprayed, unlike 2,4-D which can vaporize and damage nearby dicotyledonous plants. Choose a day to spray with low winds and no thunderstorms in prospect for at least 3 hours. The alternative is to pull out all the weeds by hand, and many of the deep-rooted perennials are impossible to pull out. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

thank you i will try that. I sprayed my yard 4 days ago and when i relized what i had done, which was yesterday i started watering my yard all day long. My problem is i used a strong mixture of round up 38 ounzes per 25 gallons.

HU-64...24, I'm a firm believer in going with the local trends. Zoysia is not a popular choice in PHO for whatever reasons. You can give it a try. There are varieties of all the ones you mention, and they do not all have the same characteristics, so look for zoysia installations and see what you think. In most large cities you can find various grass types in use at places like museums, zoos, and botanical gardens. I am reasonably certain that ASU uses only seeded bermuda, so I can save you the time of looking there. Their stadium grounds are separate from the general university and uses only hybrid bermuda. You can check local nurseries to see if any of them sell zoysia, and ask to see some installations. Check nurseries in/near Scottsdale, because zoysia can be expensive to maintain.

OK so its Sexy Rexy (may live, damage has stopped about 6 inches down the plant, canes seem ok) Iceberg (not too upset) Korde's Perfecta (1st year with it and it is GONE) Julia Child (may live, same as SR) and some of my others are showing signs of damage, like Impatient and Hot Cocoa. Only leaf damage on most but the ones above are looking awful Haven't seen the neighbor yet.....My Blue Bayou and September Morns were bands this year so they are at my house where I can watch them and keep them out of the strong sun we get at the shop. I was just saying if he had to kill some at least he didn;t kill hard to find ones....or the new climbers I got that will be hard to replace!
