Artificial grass is really great for water scarce areas like South Africa, or for just greening up outdoor areas at the office. I must agree with some of the negatives of it, like it being extremely hot in the summer. And reading about the movie scout rejecting a location owner because of the sheen is an eye opener. But generally, for a normal home or office environment, I couldn't vouch for artificial grass any more!

Considering using artificial turf around the outside of our soon to be new pool.

Reading the comments I noticed that these are many years old and am curious how the people that had artificial turf installed back then are now feeling about it? Are you still happy, would you still recommend it and install it again?

Thanks very much in advance for any advice!

(Regarding the environmental issues, my front yard is all natural and the artificial turf will more or less be the edging for plant beds with real plants, bushed and trees!).

Back in 2014 I commented above about our project to install turf in our backyard. At first, it was great, looked awesome, held up with a big dog, all ways grand. A few years in, the infill stopped being effective, there was an oder when the weather was warm, it it felt like to reflected a lot of heat during the summer. The surface also became warm.

When we moved out in 2016 and tenants moved in for just 1.5 years, their multiple dogs (many we didn’t know about until later) destroyed it. We tried to salvage but it wasn’t worth it.

Fast forward to 2022 and as a result of some of the previous issues, coupled with the dogs the tenants had, we decided to scrap it and move to a succulent instead (carpet of the stars).

It’s still early days for the ground cover (not completely filled it although making progress), but we are already noticing a marked difference in the back. Surprisingly, less bugs (flies) and less oder.

Although I recommended turf before, years later I’m no longer convinced it’s the right solution.
