Mesquite seedling - should I prune?

Hi, I have a mesquite tree seedling that germinated last year. I want it to eventually be a single trunk yard tree. There is an upright stem, but there are also other stems (growing out of the ground at the base) less upright, some laterally. I don't want it to grow into a shrub or multi-trunk. Is it too soon to prune off the competing stems? Its only two years old, the upright stem is only a foot tall. If I should leave it alone for now that is ok, but then when should I prune off the other stems? Thanks,
