No sweet potatoes for me - what should I plant instead?
Comments (15)wow, thanks for all the input! Okra: I feel bad about saying it, but, well, I'm not a big okra fan. I've never purchased, grown, or prepared it myself, but I've had it a few times in restaurants and it hasn't really inspired me. Winter Squash: I am growing several vines of butternut and futtsu winter squash on my new squash trellis already, as well as rampicante and tatume summer squash which can do double duty as winter squash. I did only start them recently, so I'm really hoping they have time... My last frost date is usually mid-October. I'm a convert to c. moschatas after my one and only time trying zucchini and bush delicatas, although I did put in a couple of spaghetti squash seeds as I've found they can pump out some squash before their inevitable borer-induced demise. Fall Brassicas, Carrots, Beets, Peas: Generally speaking I have other spots planned for these crops, although I might move some into this bed to get an earlier start. Especially the brassicas, if I'm going to need row covers (I'm on the fence about this, because without row covers my brassicas get infested with caterpillars and whiteflies, and the rowcovers seem to make the whitefly population explode. I'll probably post for some advice on this.) Pole Beans: I felt stymied by a lack of additional trellis space, but now that I think about it, they're called 'pole' beans, right? I have some extra 7' bamboo I could probably rig some bean tepees with...and I'd love some extra beans... Sweet Potatoes: This was going to be my first year with them, and we really enjoy them (and they take no prep at all, just tossing them in the oven or even the toaster oven) so I'll probably give a few slips a go just as a test. My sprouts are about 2 inches long (max) - any tips on sizing up slips in a hurry? Potatoes: I was also very intrigued by that tip from Farmerdill about the fall potatoes, but I haven't dug my spring potatoes yet and I'm not sure when they'll be ready. Maybe I'll look in the cabinet to see if I have any shrivelly tentacle monsters left over from last year.. So I suppose my sweet potato bed will now be a sweet potato/potato/pole bean/brassica/lettuce/herbs/greens/volunteer tomatoes/carrots/beets bed? It doesn't have the same clarity of purpose, but it certainly sounds interesting......See MoreI cannot compost, what can I use instead?
Comments (25)Try using red or white clover in your garden I have observed that grass wasn't growing near a part of our yard where we grew melons and watermelon so this year as an experiment we our going to thow white organic cloverseeds in our vegetable garden It is supposed to also fix nitrogen in the soil just as beas when planted with corn as Squash shades and protects of what's known as The Three Sisters.Oh White clover is supposed to be a good grass suppressor prevents grass from growing just whats needed in our garden.First we did a layer of 3 layers of the white ink less news paper wet it all down with our iltered garden hose then put cardboard around the whole garden fence then wet that down too alk done o a non windy day topoed with cow manure and some chicken manure then we put 3 inches of woodchips or woodchip mulch last year in the Spring but all that should have been done in the Fall! This year we are not planting plants but Only Organic Heirloom seeds and some Organic plants howeveryou need to keep tge woodchips away from the stems and keep around the drip area only! Put Toilet paper rolks around seedlings to prevent cutworms thise white cabbage montths lay.Spray aroundfir ticks aunts red yes and fleas Use Garlic online stuff I'll get back you thx medicine...See MoreWhere can I get red clay?

Comments (49)Yknow, IMHO, I wish we all could drop the "D" word from our vocabulary. If we love it , if its well made, if its functional - then a place can be found for it, period. In other words - your china cab is just fine, and it does look good on the side rather than viewed head on. That said of course we like our rooms freshened up now and then - but I think you can jazz it up in other ways incl choosing a new color ILOVE greens/browns/tans, but the pea soup color Im kind of tired of. (or so it looks on my monitor anyway, which has been known to be wrong.) Definitely think about going deeper richer. Dont know if Penny's or Anglo's deep dark colors are good for you but it gives you an idea at least of what deeper/richer could do for you. If all else fails maybe you could just take the living room color and just go a few steps darker/more intense with it. Let the DR be cozy and intimate complete w/ a big china cabinet - why not? The DR should relate well to the LR, and that would be one way of doing it. Minor quibble - I would think about that wall space where the china cab was - is there a third pic that could fit in there? With cabinet moved, that wall becomes very significant. Not liking just the two pics , needs to be 3 I think..... Or some other wall decor or arrangement .... minor thing, so perhaps just wait for the inspiration or right thing to come along....See MoreRelated Professionals
