You have a gorgeous room, gorgeous rug, great view! You need rather substantial , "over-stuffed" chairs with a squarish profile to go w/ your sofa. Pottery barn sells chairs perfect for your room. As for your rug, you need to get more of your furniture on to your rug. You don't want your rug to "float." Even if it's just the front feet of the sofa & chairs, that's enough. Also, have you thought about facing the sofa toward the fireplace? The fireplace is a beautiful focal point & it's a shame to have your back facing that pretty outdoor view! I see that you probably couldn't have your chairs flanking the fireplace because the chair on the left would block the entrance to the room. Still, you could put one on the right & possibly put a chair in front of the window. You also may want to experiment w/ angling the pieces. Whatever you do, just have a little more furniture on the rug! The rug looks like it may be a little small for the space...is it a 9x8? 9x13 might be better. Two nice club chairs, in a print or check that is smaller than the most prominent pattern (of dark scrolls on light background) in your rug. Depending upon your proposed decorating scheme, a herringbone tweed might be nice, or a small check in the colours of your rug. You could even do a smaller (about 2 or 3" blocks) buffalo-type check in a black and cream or charcoal and cream, looking also at your flooring and fireplace surround.

No matter what you chose, please move that sofa about a foot onto the rug. The room looks choked with the sofa so near the windows.

I think the chairs should have a lower profile--a lower back--than the sofa, as well.

Beautiful room. That fireplace, in particular, is gorgeous. I agree with moving the furniture onto the rug, and like kswl's ideas for the chairs. I would add: the end tables are too small for your sofa. The sofa is large and "bulky," while the end tables are small and dainty. Also, I would switch the placement of the sofa and the new chairs (when you get them), so that the chairs are arranged in front of the window, with perhaps a nice round table and lamp between them, and the sofa is where the chairs are now. :)

I ditto what smallhome suggested, by relocating the sofa to where the dining chairs are, and new lower backed chairs, with a table in between, where the sofa presently is.

Stinky-gardener apparently didn't see your comment that the TV/entertainment unit is to the left, directly opposite the
fireplace, so naturally you need to locate the seating where it can view both fireplace and tv. Then once you relocate the sofa, making sure that at least the front legs sit on the rug you end up using, you should select a rectangular shaped coffee table to be placed in front of the sofa.

You might want to rotate the rug so that the fringed ends are underneath the sofa legs, (once it's moved so it faces the windows), and the new chairs would be angled opposite the sofa. You could use one of your lamps on that new round table between the new chairs, and the other lamp on an end table between the F/P and sofa.

Pottery barn has a good selection of coffee tables, as well as upholstered chairs with a low profile, so that might be a good place to start.

OOps! Yep, missed the whole line about the entertainment center/big screen TV! Guess I was so mesmerized by the picture that I overlooked some of the text...its's a striking room!
Nanny2a & organic smallhome have great suggestions for furniture placement that incorporate that piece. I agree w/organic, the end tables are at odds w/the bulkiness of the sofa! We all seem to feel a need to pull the furniture onto the rug! Stinky-Gardener

The rug would definitely need to be bigger if furniture is going to sit on it and the sofa moved a tad away from the windows; your room is gorgeous btw.

The rug and the room are beautifulÂand marble fireplace is outstanding! The rug does seem way too small for your LR. If the placement of the furniture is corrected, the rug will look even more out of scale. Perhaps you can exchange it for a larger size? Forget about leather recliners or tilt-back chair/ottoman combos. As the others suggested, look for low profile armchairs with enough substance to balance the bulk of the sofa. I like kswlÂs suggestions about fabric selection. I also like the idea of relocating the sofa to the other side of the room and putting your chairs in front of the window with a round table and lamp between them. ThereÂs too much weight in front of the window. Your side tables are very attractive, but I agree that they donÂt work with your sofa.

Thanks so much for your compliments and suggestions. When I tried the sofa on the opposite side, it seemed to cut off the room (and it's not terribly attractive from the back); however, I'll try it again once I get the chairs. I just pulled it out 6-8" and that seemed to help. I love that rug, but it's only 6'9" x 10'3". Maybe once I get an ottoman or table on it, it will look better.

I can now see that the end tables aren't the right style and will look for some that are larger and simpler.

The chairs need to be comfy for TV watching, so the backs can't be too low. I guess they don't have to recline if there are ottomans with them or nearby. The sofa ends recline, so a coffee table near the sofa would have to be quite small. But are two ottomans too much for that space? What about one recliner and one chair/ottoman? I've never had leather and am liking the H&M chairs for comfort as well as looks. What do you think of these styles? (The last three are Vanguard.) If leather, I'm thinking medium to dark brown, maybe with a hint of red.

I think the rug size will be fine if the furniture is just grouped a bit more tightly. Looking at the room from the photo perspective, I'd move the rug over about six inches, and move the sofa so that the front feet sit on the rug. I think the end tables are okay for the sofa, but believe I would balance that strong line (sofa + endtables) out with a nice round skirted 30" table between the two chairs. A contrasting fabric with a big piped edge around the bottom will take a larger lamp that can service both chairs. You can keep a nice box with your remote in it if that is where you watch tv and movies.

I would also move the urn from the thruway to the kitchen. Even if there is enough room to pass by it, it still visually blocks the way.

While I like the rug you're showing, I personally would add an accent color in the rug, such as red, to add some punch to the room. And I agree with others that it needs to be larger.

Are you married to that couch? I would replace it with a leather couch that's not a recliner looking sofa and then get two fabric chairs. Or maybe a chenille sofa with the two leather chairs. I just think the sofa is wrong for your beautiful room. It doesn't match. Tables need to be bigger.

mlraff53: I'm inclined to agree with you about the sofa. It somehow just doesn't "fit" the room. :)

I agree you need a different sofa if it's in your budget. Also, if you swap the sofa and chairs, put a sofa table behind the sofa and add a few decorative items, buffet lamps, a plant, some books. If you get a sofa table with a shelf underneath, you can add decorative items to the lower shelf, too, which will camoflauge the back of the sofa and make it more inviting, less constricting.

The sofa in front of the windows blocks light and your gorgeous view. You want chairs that have open legs to allow the light to flow better.

I still think you need a large square coffee table or ottoman in the center.

You need a swivel chair unless you move them to face the tv. You can't watch tv side ways comfortably. Trust me.

Here's a possible swivel chair -- and how about a cozy comfy chenille fabric?

The best way to try furniture out --go out to the local stores and literally sit down! Take a notepad and write down the possible chair's dimensions and size -- and any other details. Helps you to keep track!

I agree with sarschios remodler about putting a sofa table behind the couch, we had to do the same with our configuration in our living room, and I love having it! It holds a good lamp for reading, has a shelf below for books and accent pieces, and hides the back of our sectional.

That is a lovely room! I agree with everyone else. Rug is too small. Try moving the sofa on the opposite side. Use the end tables maybe in a bedroom? Buy a round table form at least 36" diameter with a tableskirt and put one of your lamps there along with 2 chairs of your choice - one with an ottoman. In the center of the room use a big round upholstered ottoman. Move your urn to another part of the room as it's blocking walkway. If you're older, you might like one of those architectural floor lamps for multi tasking and put it by the sofa. I can see two leather chairs in front of the windows as someone else showed and maybe a more traditional type sofa?

Time to go shopping! It seems the consensus is to 1) switch the sofa and chairs, 2) put a narrow table behind the sofa, 3) get a larger rug, 4) get furniture that is a bit more "refined", if possible, and 5) add a round table between the chairs and at least one ottoman. I might keep the sofa until everything else is in place, in case I run out of money! Oh and the urn might be moved, although the doorway is over 4' wide. It might look good next to the entertainment unit.

My challenge will be to find chairs that are comfortable without being bulky, since I tend to lean towards comfort. I'll drive a little further today to see what I can find.

You have a lovely room and it will be worth the effort to take the time to locate the right furnishings.

Try Pottery Barn for to get some ideas about stylish comfort. Some of their furniture is on sale now. With down-wrapped cushions and down throw pillows, it really is possible to be comfortable without resorting to a recliner!

Also, if there is a Bassett Direct near you, it would be worthwhile to visit the store, as they provide complementary design services. We had a very good experience with a store here in Florida when we were refurnishing our second home in North Carolina. I took in the blueprints and the designer drew out possible furniture arrangments and did a marvelous job assisting us with our selections. All of the furniture can be customized by fabric and finish and shown to you on a monitor as modified.
