Happy Pi(e) Day!

Happy Pi(e) day! Are you celebrating? We recently moved, and I'll look for a lunch place that has pie on the menu. I rarely if ever saw it in California, but Pennsylvania is a more pie-y state, I think.

My 9-year-old son insisted that we have pie, so my husband baked a cherry pie last night. We'll dig into it today!

Boxo, again so BEAUTIFUL. I become just like a kid, counting each one so beautifully placed! and saying yeah, here is Abraham D'Arby, ooo, there's the Dahlia, got the two Easies, there's the Phlox! Here's Sunset Celebration...and so forth. I still have all my old bookmarks of your rose threads too except some have shifted in the albums so they no longer are visible, so it's always a treat to be able to see the ones that are gone.... I am one happy Stalker again, hurrrray!

Even though I was good at HS geometry (stunk at math, though), I realized the use of Pi when I bought a house and wanted to put a mulch circle around a tree and edge it with plastic edging. Then I learned I don't need to take Pi beyond the decimal, because the edging came in 20' rolls. Some kids in my son's third-grade class had a Pi contest: how far out can you memorize and recite Pi? DS won, closely trailed by the girl who had a huge crush on him through high school. He is still such a math kid. Won't write an English essay to save his life but took Differential Equations for fun. And finally, the Purdue engineering school cheer, according to my dad (I can't type in math on my tablet, so forgive the modern English representation) "E to the x, dy, dx E to the x, dx. Cosine! Secant! Tangent! Sine! 3.14159!" And to this day, I take Pi out to 5 places (even though edging comes in 20-ft rolls).

On Pi day, I usually make a quiche and a dessert-type pie. I’m not doing as well as IdaClaire, but I’m down 14 lbs and I don’t want to lose ground. Does a piece of filet mignon count? It was round....and delicious! I cooked the filets sous vide. DH’s was cooked to 140 degrees, mine to 130 degrees. I made a DIY Montreal Seasoning blend that was fantastic. I modified the seasoning blend recipe to fit what I had. Instead of coriander, I used Garam Masala and instead of onion powder, I used a shallot blend from The Spice House. After the steaks were cooked, I threw them in a cast iron skillet to brown. Using an old Julia Child technique, once they were browned, I poured off the fat and deglazed the pan with red wine. With the pan off the heat, I swirled in a small chunk of butter. That has got to be the easiest and greatest pan sauce ever!

I made a gluten-free crumb crust and will be adding a layer of whipped cream cheese topped with the leftover blueberry topping I made this morning for the Oatmeal Pancakes. It's a small pie dish that will serve 4 small slices. The crust is cooling ready for filling and refrigerating. Such fun.

Much pie in PA, especially shoo-fly pie in the center of the state. I have a small cherry pie from a local bakery in Avon-by-the-Sea.

Find yourself a good diner, that's a pretty PA/NJ thing, even compared to here in MI. There's an awesome bakery in Willow Grove, but they are a cake, cookie and awesome danish cinnamon bun place, pies not so much. It's called

Weinrich Bakery, address is 55 Easton Rd., just up the street from the mall. Closed on Monday. One of the best bakeries ever.

My son is home from college - he's making us a French Silk Chocolate Pie right now. We will eat it after his strawberry-habanero marinated ribs that are slow cooking in the oven :)

We've yet to decide if we're going to order a pie (pizza pie that is) for dinner or make a pot pie. And we made a giant chocolate chip cookie, baked in a pie pan for dessert. Love Pi(e) day!

Hopefully you'll soon find a good farm market Sushi. Lots of great Amish baked goods, including pies.

Nope, I completely missed it. Elery and I are building an island in the kitchen and my prep space is pretty much taken up with drills, hammers, tapcons, silicone adhesive. Maybe I could do a belated Pi(e) Day? I just really want to get this done before Easter, so no pie.

Aw. No pie on rounded pie day? (PI is 3.14159, and rounded would be 03.1416 or 03/14/16) . We too didn't have pie on pi day. Even though we're complete geeks, math or otherwise.

No pie in California?? Oh that wouldn't suit me at all! You'll have no problems finding all kinds of pie in PA.

I made a coconut cream pie last Saturday, so 2 pies in one week is far too many, much as I would love it. :-)
