Toggle switch Cover

Yeah, I've come across this site. But all they have is the same thing I'm finding everywhere else (the below) which flips the switch off when its closed. I need something that will leave the switch in the same position that I put it in when I close the cover.

I have a use for a device that would make you think twice before throwing a switch rather than preventing it. The strap link makes me think that there is probably a simple, inexpensive way to do it, but more sightly than a galvanized metal loop. Maybe find some plastic of a nice color that can be made into a loop and slip it under the screws. No code violation as long as: 1. The cable is the proper size for the breaker. (Make sure the breaker is the correct size for both appliances) 2. The switch is UL certified and in the correct enclosure (You won't find parts at Radio Shack to make a switch of this capacity and the enclosure won't be found at Home Depot, etal) 3. Other aspects of the installation are correct (grounding, etc) Alternatively, You could use a contactor relay to control each appliance and a 15 amp SPDT switch to control the relays. You would not then need 40 amp cables to your switch. OR There are contactors that connect to Load A when the control relay is energized and Load B when not. I've used these for much smaller loads, but you you could talk to an electrical supply house or call a manufacturer (Seimans, Allen-Bradley, Cutler Hammer, etc) to see if they have anything that fits your need.

I went to Lowes, even bought the four pieces, and then decided that rather than have to do the work to get them to look like one piece, then paint them, andthen live with the fear of cracks appearing all the time, I will just order a paintable wood one from someone online (there's someone on eBay who makes beautiful wood switch covers--I'm having some made just in hard maple to paint). If anyone's interested, I'll post my opinion of his work when I get it; it comes highly recommended by folks over on the Home Decorating Forum, btw. Thanks for all your help!

Having lived with both, I like toggles because the motion is more natural. With rockers you have to push back and swipe as you go by the switch, with rockers it's a simple swipe. And I can do it with my elbow, too, or even the edge of the laundry basket :) My dad has buttons, but they are kind on an angle so it's not a straight push button, it's part swipe, maybe it's more like a rocker but it rocks only one direction. Anyway, they are illuminated which is really nice at night, or when you go down in the basement! After 47 years, some of the illuminations don't work anymore, don't know if they can be replaced,,but it doesn't seem to bother anyone.

Something like this? Is it for a standard residential light switch or a more typical exclamation-point-shaped toggle switch?

Unfortunately those are light switch covers and not toggle switch covers.

Have you tried ebay? Seems like a lot of cheap options on there.

Edit: On closer look, it looks like they only keep the switch off so they aren't what you're looking for.

Instead of adding a cover, can you replace the toggle switch with a locking toggle switch? I think typically you'd have to pull up on the switch before you can move positions. Is this just to prevent accidentally knocking the switch?

Greg, yep those are the same cheapy covers I'm finding everywhere, and you are correct, they will flip the switch off when the cover is closed. My son loves plans and space craft cockpits so I'm going to build him a moc/play (but functional) one for his birthday. The cover will go on the main power switches that supply voltage to the other panels (hence the need for the switch to stay on when the cover is closed) so there is a 'look' appeal that I'm going for as well as function. While a locking toggle will do the function it wont look as 'cool'. :-)

I have done a lot of Google'ing but have only found the one in my original post, but it is $65 per cover.......... So I figured it was time to turn to the forums for help.

I wonder if you could modify one of those cheapy covers. Maybe you can cut out the section that flips the switch off.

I guess the vision of this toy is yours, but it actually makes more sense to me to have the main switches have the typical covers that you're finding.

When he's playing with it, the covers are up and the power is on. When he's done, he flips the covers down and it turns off. Makes sense to me.

Could you mount the cover or the switch upside down so that when your son closes the cover it flips the switch ON?
