I ate them as a child. Had to be on Wonder Bread!

My SIL, the chef, eats all his sandwiches with chips tucked inside, no matter what the filling, though just potato chips would be over board, unless the bread was potato bread!

That took me back a few years (quite a few). I was going to the community college and had a part time job afternoons. The college cafeteria had somewhat plain tuna salad sandwiches for less than a dollar, the sandwich came with a snack bag of potatoes chips. Sliding the chips into the sandwich gave it a better texture and I think must have added needed salt because the chips inside did improve those lunches on the go - eaten dashing for the parking lot and driving the 2 miles to my job with no time to sit down and eat anyplace ;)

Interesting to read that some people like mayo with their peanut butter. I remember my mother making peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches which we ate because it was there, but there is nothing tempting me to go in the kitchen and make them for my kids. Nice to know my mom was not the only one out there eating such things.

One of my favorite burger memories, the best burger, at Ernestine and Hazels in Memphis...a side of classic potato chips we put right under the top bun.

The classic Lays, not any thing flavored, on a tuna salad, is just the right crunch and a bit of salty.

Some things are incomprehensible but it is just some odd pleasure that is unexplainable. (ruffles are too thick).

After a great healthy week i often order on Friday, a BLT with extra 'B'...avocado, then stuff in some chips.

I grew up eating pb and dill pickle sandwiches, no mayo, though. Sometimes, I just have to have one, even now. I'd choose that over pb&j any day!

In the Sue Grafton novels her heroine, Kinsey Milhone, loves peanut butter and pickle sandwiches!!

My dad used to eat peanut butter with big bologna and ketchup sandwiches. Always on what we referred to as "mush" bread (white Wonder Bread type) <shudder>

One of our Cuban restaurants serves deep fried seasoned burgers topped with lettuce, tomato and those canned potato sticks.

In Great Britain they eat sandwiches of french fries on buttered bread quite often. Ketchup optional. They are called, "Chip Butties" since they call french fries "chips." Can't remember what they call potato chips.

The thing with mayo and peanut butter for me is the texture. IT makes peanut butter not quite so thick and sticky, it "greases" it, I guess, LOL. Dad always put butter on his peanut butter sandwiches, as did my Mother. Grandma used Miracle Whip and that's where I got the habit.

I always liked the unusual sandwiches. Will have to make some tuna or chicken salad soon so I can have them with chips on them. Oh, DH used to cringe when I would make myself a mayo and pickle relish sandwich on white toast. Tasted good to me.

And you know that cr^$$y Kraft Sandwich spread?? On white bread?? Maybe a layer of bread and butter pickles....maybe not... YEAH!!

Linda, when I was about 10 years old, a friend gave me a Heinz sandwich spread with Velveeta on Wonder bread. Those ingredients were completely foreign to me and I felt so elegant and refined as I slowly savored it…….

All natural PB & Butter on crumbly whole grain bread for my hippie childhood. BUT occasionally I would get PB and Fluff sandwiches - pure white gloppy sugary artificialness available only at other people's houses.

When I was a kid, potato chips were a luxury, but if we had ever had them, we probably would have made sandwiches with them. We made sandwiches with left-over boiled potatoes, though, with Miracle Whip, mustard, salt and pepper on Wonder bread, tasted like potato salad. We had left over pork and beans sandwiches, with Miracle Whip. We never had Mayo in the house, it was Miracle Whip only. When I made tuna salad for DH the first time and used Miracle Whip, he was horrified. We ate everything and anything in the house on sandwiches, many times we had lettuce sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches, tomato sandwiches, banana, PB and honey sandwiches. My favorite to this day is fried baloney sandwiches, the only way I'll eat baloney to this day.

One of my favorites, CA Kate...Miracle Whip, bologna & a layer of potato chips. As a kid, I remember eating (just) Miracle Whip & white bread sandwiches. Never heard of peanut butter & marshmallow whip sammies until I started hanging out here. We ate peanut butter w/ a bit of white Karo stirred in. Also PBJ's and PBJ's w/ sliced bananas. Leftover roast--pork or beef--sometimes was ground & made into 'salad' sandwiches (like tuna salad--with Miracle Whip, relish, celery, etc.). And we sometimes ate MW & sliced cheddar sandwiches. Cold cheese sandwiches as opposed to grilled. Probably because of living in the Sunbelt before air conditioning was ubiquitious.

Something that seemed odd to me...when we moved here to Wisconsin, I was always hearing of people using butter on a sandwich (instead of MW or mayo)...although I do remember eating just bread and butter (oleo) sandwiches when I was a kid. But we never used it as a spread w/ a protein layer...always MW, mayo or mustard. And I've heard of lard sandwiches but we never ate those. Although we did have pigs and I remember my mom rendering lard.

Rita--Mom made fried bologna & scrambled eggs once in a while. Cut bologna in bite sized pieces, fried it a bit & stirred in beaten eggs.

cilantro, we often had cheese and mayo sandwiches, and although I never ate lard sandwiches, my mother tells of eating lard and sugar sandwiches and having all the kids at school wanting to trade their bologna for them. Grandma also fried slices of bologna, sliced off a big chunk that was kept in the refrigerator. Sometimes she'd grind that bologna and mix it with mayo and sweet pickles for sandwich spread.

Rita, I used to make baked bean sandwiches, but they were just baked beans, cold, spread on a slice of white bread which was then folded in half and eaten on my way out the door, usually on my way to the barn to get the pony!

Annie, this brings back memories. Fried bologna sandwiches, ground bologna-salad-like sandwiches, but the crowning glory for us (one girl, 5 boys on a farm in
Ohio) was a large unsliced chunk of bologna scored, studded with cloves, basted with brown sugar something-or-other and served as the centerpiece for Sunday dinner.

In really bad times, I remember eating old popcorn with milk for breakfast.

Seagrass, we also ate stale popcorn with milk and sugar, like breakfast cereal. "It's corn isn't it? They make corn flakes, don't they?" Ahem. I didn't buy it then either, LOL. When times were really tough we ate cornmeal mush. I hate mush to this day.

We never had the bologna for Sunday dinner, but we had it nearly all the rest of the time. Elery also remembers his mother cooking big chunks of bologna for dinner, so I thought it was a Midwestern thing, but apparently not. Hey, we were practically neighbors, all Grandma's family was from Maumee, Ohio!

Anyway, we had bologna when we could afford it. That and peanut butter sandwiches made with peanut butter in buckets or from the "commodities" program or my favorite, the stuff that came in Uncle Marty's k-rations!

Yes, potato chips are called "crisps" by the Brits. As a young'un I ate more than a few potato chip sandwiches. Just chips on bread. I advanced to adding some peanut butter on there. Usually white bread but if we had the "Mrs. Bailey's" wheat, oh what a treat! And a peanut butter and bacon on toast is a joy to this day. I generally like peanut butter on my toast when having breakfast. Goes great with the eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns...

seagrass_gw, funny you should mention that, but did you know the Kellogg's first dry cereal was actually popcorn? They served it at the sanitarium. Decided to sell it but had trouble keeping it fresh, leading to the development of corn flakes. (at least according to Alton Brown.)

cynic, I guess I should have known that, since Kellogg's is right here in Michigan. I just thought it was a Native American thing, I know we've been eating popcorn for a long time. They've even found popcorn dating back to pre-Inca time. I wonder how it came to be a salted, buttered snack instead of breakfast food...

I forgot to put the disclaimer on it that it's according to Alton Brown anyway. Some dispute it claiming it was eaten that way long before. I can't say either way. How it changed? Who knows? Maybe if it was no longer a breakfast food it was used more as a snack and people wanted different flavor, or more flavor. Interesting to ponder. And I guess it could be totally wrong too! Maybe Alton's fact-checkers were on vacation? LOL

Potatoes with bread are delicious. I sometimes make myself a mashed potato sandwich: just white bread with mashed potatoes. Dill pickles? Yes! Mayo?? Possible, but it never occurred to me to try. I suspect mayo might spoil the divine potato-bread combination.

Peanut butter? No thanks! Peanut is too dominant for that.

I had the most scrumptious pizza at Sullivan Street Bakery in Soho--thin oily slices of fried potato on flatbread. Divine!

My mom used to make braunschweiger and mayo sandwiches for me when I was a kid. She loved the stuff, me it was ok but for sure a childhood memory. Sometimes she would put chips on them sometimes not.

I never ate pop corn as cereal but my great grandmother who grew up poor in Kentucky would make me left over rice with milk, sugar and raisins for breakfast. I called it rice cereal. She would serve it warm or cold I guess depending on her mood.

I wanna try making pizza topped with seasoned ricotta and thinly sliced fried potatoes. I tried making it once, my dough was NOT good. You need a crispy crust to pull it off, IMHO. Mine was too "doughy."

My mum eats her potato chip sandwiches with ketchup and sometimes a slice of cheese. She only does it with barbeque chips, however. My best friend used to eat his hot dogs topped with crushed potato chips. The closest I have ever come was putting French fries on top of a burger (usually whenever I get Wendy's). My mum also dips plain potato chips in vanilla ice cream.

Brad both of my daughters and all four of my grandkids dip their French fries in ice cream or shakes, I think it's pretty much the same thing!

I've dipped fries in shakes before but never thought of ice cream but then again I usually don't have the ice cream at the same time as the fries! I don't know why I dipped them in the shake. It didn't really appeal to me but I guess I've seen people do it and thought I'd give it a try. Something else checked off the bucket list.
