Both are nice, but because of the dark floor, I'd probably put the granite in for the vanity top. Very pretty!

I'd replace the countertop. But see if you can find a similar granite that has a bit of brown in it. That'd tie in the vanity and medicine chest.

I would definitely go with the lighter granite for contrast.

I would grab that White Aspen. I couldn't find a light colored remnant in the entire Portland metro area to go with my dark cherry vanity. The Aspen has a touch of taupe in it to relate to the cherry, and it works well with the gray floor and white shower curtain. Template around the black blob if possible.

I wouldn't bother with adding brass accents to the faucet. We replaced ours but still have brass door knobs. Metals don't have to match and one day you may replace the brass shower door.

I would keep your current counter and paint the base cabinet white (many will disagree!). Then I'd remove the mirrored cabinet above and replace with just a large, decorative mirror. (It looks like there's plenty of storage in the base cabinet.)

IMO, the base cabinet is too heavy and dark next to the flooring.

To get "updated elegance", I think lightening up the space by painting the base cabinet or at the very least, removing the heavy looking wall cabinet would bring great results.

And I think the current countertop is more elegant than the splotchy granite.

I like your new faucet and paint color.

I really like the idea of having a mirror instead of the cabinets; it will brighten the room and make it seem larger. Once the lighter countertop is on I don't feel that painting the bottom cabinets will be so much of a necessity.

jen- I believe the local granite place had the river white. I will look at it again. I think I ruled it out because it had more gray where as the aspen white had black veins. I thought they would pull the blackish floor in more.

lisad82- Dh would never allow me to paint the cherry wood cabinets, but I love the suggestion of removing the medicine cabinet & replacing with a mirror. I will definitely run that by him. Thanks!

I'd do a combination - I'd remove the wall cabinet and replace it with a mirror AND I'd change the countertop to the lighter granite. It's going to look great (honestly, just getting rid of the wall cabinet will update it instantly)

I'd remove the upper cabinet and replace with a mirror and then re-evaluate the counter top. Is the counter cultured marble? If so you could try honing it which would give it a lighter look and save the expense of fabricating the granite.

I have talked DH into removing top medicine cabinet! We have never stored anything in it anyways, as this is the guest bath. Any suggestions on what shape & finish the mirror should be??

Taking down that cabinet will be a great help. I'm so glad you're able to do that. As far as a mirror shape, maybe oval to go with your sink and toilet? And as far as finish I think a silver leaf effect would work. Just nothing dark. BTW, I've had great luck over the years finding mirrors at Home Goods.

I do like the idea of eliminating the upper cabinet and replacing it with a mirror. I prefer the dark counter, especially since you already have it and it's perfectly fine. Instead, while I can't see the light fixture, I'd put the money into lighting, esp around the mirror...either above or to the sides or a pretty pendant in front. I think the darkness you feel is more from a lack of light than from the colors in the room. The overhead is good for general lighting, but lighting around the mirror makes you and the room look better.

Lisa has a very good idea, IMO, to remove the upper cabinets and just put a large mirror there, maybe with a couple of sconces on each side.

I probably would not paint the lower cabinet, though. Painting cabinets successfully is so hard to do.

A simple rectangular mirror (hung vertically) would be fine. Just make sure you get the dimensions correct for the space after hanging the light fixture you select. Just as a guess, it will likely be no more than 36-38" tall. And the mirror width shouldn't extend beyond the dimensions of the vanity. The frame could be any material. It could match the existing cabinetry or you could go with a silvered frame to coordinate with the fixtures.

Another vote for your original granite selection (White Aspen).

I'd keep the traditional feeling of the vanity going in the room. Sconces would be a natural with your sink base bump out, positioned over the drawers. I'd get a full-width frameless beveled mirror and mount the sconces directly on the mirror. They'd bounce the light and brighten the dark paint, floor, and vanity.

For the granite countertop, I'd do a simple ogee edge. It looks better than an eased edge with your bumped sink base, and it goes well with the raised panel cabinetry, fluting, and stained cherry.
