Can you help me with my master bathroom counters?

We are thinking about replacing the counter, sinks and faucets in our master bathroom. At some point we will be retiling the shower, but that is going to be awhile (years!). So for the time being, they need to match. We will also not be retiling the floors, much to my dismay. The hubby says no way!

The walls will be painted Sherwin Williams Basket Beige like our bedroom and I would like to bring in touches of blues to coordinate with that room as well.

Because we are planning on keeping the floors, I am trying to decide if I should go light or dark. Currently, the space is very bland!

I would do nothing. If you replace those functional sinks and top now, you are tying yourself into that look for your remodel years down the road. Wouldn't it be better to be free to go with whatever look you love in that unpredictable future? What if you then love something that does nothing at all for your newish sinks and counter? After all, ten years ago everyone was doing beige stone and now (as you can attest), lots hate it.

You can see what I used with my calacatta gold honed tile and dark wood, furniture-style vanity: leathered antique brown, which is really more of a grayish brown color. I didn't want to use marble on the counter for maintenance reasons and because I couldn't find one that matched or coordinated well with the floor (even other calacatta's didn't look right). I also considered a gray limestone from Greece, but, again, the maintenance problems.

Also, I don't know that I'll have the right space for this painting, but I'd love to use it in the master bath if I can make it work. I thought about over the tub on the wall to the left, but the placement of the towel bar there may make it awkward. I found this in an antique shop in Suffolk, England. The tag indicated it to be a print and I paid the equivalent of $45 for it, but when I removed it from its awful original frame, I realized it is an original painting. It's a scene from St. Ives in Cornwall and is very special to me. Forgive the glaring reflection from the glass.

It's a bit of a tricky space given its size. If you could get one more foot in either direction, it would open up more possibilities. Right now you are a bit limited due to maintaining proper space for code. Given the space constraints you either have to go to small shower stall to get the large vanity or go to a smaller vanity to get the larger shower. I errored on the side of the larger shower with these designs. These are basic sketches, not to scale. It changes the door position slightly. The window can stay where it is with these designs (or you can move to wall B with either option 2 or 3). In either of these designs, you can flip the door to open into the bedroom rather than the bathroom, which gives you an easier space to live with in terms of egress. Option 1. A shower wall is built next to the toilet. a half wall is built next to the vanity, with glass from wall top to ceiling. You could conceivably throw a laundry basket behind the door in the corner. The vanity would end up being about 38", unless you cheat into the shower more. Toilet would be 32" of floor space, but you could cheat into the shower to make it 36" (which is preferred) Option 2. The shower is 3 ft deep and then the width of the room. You could conceivably shrink the width of this a bit and incorporate a linen closet/open storage space where you could store your laundry on the side closes to the door. The vanity is 42" wide and you have 36" of floor space for the toilet. Feel free to swap position of the toilet and vanity here. Option 3. If you want to give up the large shower in favor of the larger vanity, you swap the shower and vanity positions in this design. This dedicates up to a 42" x 42" space for a shower stall (smaller will give you a bit more open floor space), which is still really quite roomy. This allows for a vanity the full length of the wall. The door is repositioned and opens the opposite way from the earlier design, although this design would definitely be better and may even require that the door actually opens into the bedroom.

Quality Calacatta is harder to obtain. You need to work with good suppliers for this. You can expect variation, as with any natural stone, but we are seeing, and perhaps due to the mining and availability right now, that there are strong variations. As for pits and chips, well that would not be acceptable. We are wrapping up a very long project and one of the baths is all Calacatta. The countertop will also be Calacatta (carefully selected from our trusted supplier and matched to the tile) but it isn't installed yet so no pictures. Here's some in progress photos. Note the third pic where we stacked the trims pieces in front of the field tile. The trims on the right were a good blend but the left was void of veining and not a good match. As a contractor with relationships and "buying power", we were able to shade all our tile in a dry lay out and return the unacceptable for replacements. You will always have SOME variance so you need to tolerate and expect this. But based on our experience we are able to discriminate between "expected" and unacceptable. It's a beautiful stone and dramatic statement if you can get it right. Good luck with your project.

I was expecting you to post some horrendous ugly pictures. But I think your bathroom looks really nice! If I were you I would leave it alone. And this is coming from a person who loves to remodel things. If you decide to do something in a few years you can change the whole color scheme if you want to. But if you do something now I think you’d just be wasting your money. Your bedroom looks really pretty too. I like the wall details behind your bed.

If you are just itching to do something to the bathroom, you could paint the walls. There are some really pretty Sherwin-Williams colors that could bring in a little bit of blue green. For example a lot of people like Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt.

Yes I think it all goes well together, if you’re not replacing the tile I’d keep it all. You need some color! I see a nice colorful runner in front of your vanity. Maybe incorporate some reds and oranges in with the brown.

I agree with Karen Rose. I see from your bedroom that you like blue, orange, wood, and white. There are lots of really pretty runners that you can get locally or order something off of Wayfair, etc. My favorite colors are blue and orange. You could bring those tones in with a colorful rug and wall art. Then if you still want a little more color, you could paint.

I should have clarified that the existing counters are plastic laminate hence us wanting to upgrade. I would LOVE to have the shower retiled now, but I have a feeling that would be expensive. It's a pretty big shower with the ceiling tiled, etc. We are definitely painting the walls soon!

I love the idea of the runner in front of the vanities to bring in color. Would you do a smaller rug of the same pattern in front of the shower or a traditional, neutral bath mat?

Probably just a coordinating bath mat, so you can throw it in the wash when needed, plus it gets wet coming in and out of the shower. If you really want to replace the tops, do a simple cream top.

There is nothing wrong with a laminate if it is in good condition. Some of us still buy it! My kitchen counters are Wilsonart laminate and my husband's bookcase appears to have a stone top, but it is Formica 360 with a matching edge.

Even if you go with a very neutral top, you will be tied to the undertones in that white or off-white countertop when you remodel. You may curse yourself for such a constraint when you go to pick tile someday.

BTW, when you do go to remodel the bathroom, it is not just a matter of re-tiling. A shower is a multi-layered thing. You can't remove the tile without ruining the waterproofing underneath (if there is any). You will likely be going back to the studs and redoing the wallboard and then waterproofing when it is time to do the shower. Not to mention the shower floor, which also will need to be waterproofed and sloped appropriately. So take your time and read in this forum over the intervening years and you will learn enough to have an intelligent conversation with your contractor (or family member) about the standard of waterproofing you expect them to achieve when they remodel. If you don't address it in the pre-planning, you may learn too late that they did not waterproof or they did it wrong.

It is a nice bathroom, I like the vanity too and bathroom already has some features that you see in newer remodels..Start with small changes to make it look cohesive.

Some suggestions:

Looks like you have chrome faucet/shower? Maybe change your towel holders, lights above the mirror to either chrome, many don't like chrome- so maybe brushed nickel? Change hardware on vanity? Change or stain the mirror frame to match the vanity. Or go for a beveled mirror?

Other Small changes might be paint, plants, runners, artwork.

Trust me live with it for a while and then when you are ready and budget allows, do a remodel that you both can agree on.
