Idyll #340 Gobbleing Our Way to Turkey Day
Comments (103)Hi Saucy...I'm here. I ended up having a lovely Thanksgiving day after thinking it would be a lonesome day with just the 2 of us. I overheard our evangelist saying he and his wife wouldn't be going to Oklahoma,( where the rest of their family was going), because of a doctor's appointment the following day.I asked them if they would be with anyone else that day, and thay said no, so I invited them to come to our house. They didn't know for sure whether they could come, but I went ahead and started the preparations on Wednesday( baking pies and pumpkin bars). I told Nolon I didn't think they would come. But Wednesday night, after we both had gone to bed early, the phone rang and it was John asking what time I wanted them to come! I was so pleased. They arrived at the time I told him ( 1 PM ) as I was putting the final touches on the meal. As one of you said about your meal...it was a real nice dinner even tho I did the preparing of it.:-) Doris brought a pumpkin pie , whipped cream, green beans, and a few other things. After we ate, and ate, and ate..:-), we visited the rest of the afternoon. It was a wonderful time ! Our former DIL decided that she wanted the girls this Thanksgiving, and Tim could have them at Christmas. She has decided they will alternate the years for the 2 holiday get-to-gethers ! (I am wondering how long she thinks Nolon and I will be around???) Since we live so far from them, and the latter part of Dec. can be very treacherous for driving here...it will remain to be seen if they make it this year. Thanksgiving has been our time with them ever since the first one was born, and she knows my stand on Christmas....just another case of her showing her true colors. Thank goodness Tim plans on bringing them this Friday for the weekend. I won't fix another Thanksgiving dinner, but that's okay. I have been reading, and enjoying, all of the posts. I am happy for all the good news, and sad with you that have sad news. Woody, I want you to know that the B 12 shots have very definitely helped. I took one a week for 4 weeks, and will begin one a month this coming tuesday. I presume they will continue the rest of my life.... I took Nolon for a checkup with a differant Doc last Monday. His regular doctor has gone into some sort of rehab, and will not be back until spring. I am thinking he ( Nolon) will be getting more appropriate treatment now. With the new meds that this doc gave him, he has already cut down on the use of the nebulizer. I don't plan on his returning to the 'old' doctor. It is wintry here. We have had a couple of skifts of snow, and had some ice on things this morning. The roads were not icy, so we didn't miss AM services. We did stay home this evening. The weather was too iffy, and it was very foggy. I am sending more hugs to Chelone... Marian...See MoreWhat have you put up 2016
Comments (200)Jack, I'm just using up the last handful of cloves that I kept "fresh", and they're just starting to sprout, so I need to use them up.... Right now I'm running with a Hereford/Highland cross, and I'm happy with that. The calves are born small but grow quickly and happily graze on brush and weeds along with their pasture. Mine are all grass fed and grass finished, and eat only that which is grown on the farm here. Well, not exactly, they all love the Little Debbie powdered sugar donuts the grandkids feed them as treats, but other than that it's grass and hay, LOL. We butcher at about 18 months, so it's really "baby beef", and my animals have acres of pasture to roam around in and just be cows. No feed lots, no crowded spaces, the barn is open but they seldom go inside unless they are escaping summer's heat. When it's time, Dallas comes to the farm and they are killed as quickly and humanely as possible. They are born on the place and never leave it, no trailers or strange places. They are not pets, (well, except old Red Cow, she's 16) but they are friendly and docile and I can handle them myself. They'd follow me off the edge of the earth for a powdered sugar donut, LOL. I have neighbors who are old farmers and they swore I'd never get an animal from birth to 1,000 pounds in 18 months on just hay and pasture, but a couple of them have now switched to grass fed because they can sell them for more money. I'm happy that you are buying beef from a neighbor, keep the little guys in business! And I mean little, right now I have 6 head of cattle. (grin) And so, I just canned 5 quarts of sirloin chunks and 3 quarts of stock. That'll be the last of my preserving until next year, as I have our family Christmas celebration on Sunday, complete with a 7 rib standing rib roast, homegrown. So, no time for canning, we'll need a new 2017 posting! A very Happy and Healthy New Year to all my friends here... Annie...See MoreWhat's Blooming in Your Garden - a Photo Thread - June 2016
Comments (43)Molie and defrost, your rock encircled gardens are both very beautiful! Jane, that Salix integra was worth all the effort you put into caring for it. It looks so light and fluffy! Claire, your impressive rugosa rose bush is what I hope mine will become! I love your other roses, but my luck with growing roses of any other kind has not gone well. I think it is just too cold here for most of them. We visited the Calvin Coolidge homestead last year. It is not far from where we live, and at a slightly higher elevation than our house, so I have to figure that if the massive rugosa rose bush next to their preserved house can thrive, so can the same type of rose on our own property. Molie, you are quite right that the wading birds would dine on goldfish at your home! "Blue heron attack" is a recurring theme on the koi pond forums! I think our pool placed right next to our house and surrounded by open land is a deterrent, but there are many creatures always on the lookout for a free fish dinner. I haven't noticed birds drinking from the pool, but many insects find that the artificial lily pads and plants provide safe footing to land and drink. Of course any unfortunate enough to fall into the water will become fish food! We do also have our brook, surrounded by pussywillow bushes, so I imagine most birds find that a safer place to drink and/or bathe....See More2016 Wandering Stitchers Retreat reminder
Comments (41)Sending happy thoughts to all at the retreat. I'll think of you as I sit sipping some wine, eating snacks in my SiL's cabin located on a tall bluff overlooking the Mississippi River this weekend....See Morecookncarpenter
