Buying Furniture - Need Advice from my Decorating Friends (PICS)
Comments (4)suzienj - I love your space. The textures are great, and that corner desk is so great! The black fabric is the one I am the most hesitant about, but I think I'll really like it. We have black furniture in other places in our house, so it will tie in well. I will post photos as I go. We have another meeting tomorrow with her, and honestly, given that it's a free service, I'm really happy. When we were building, I hired an expensive certified interior designer, and I wasn't pleased at all with her work (ended up "firing" her and making all the choices myself - she said she hated the distressed look that I love, but that's another long story). So, I guess the price tag isn't always an indicator of quality. Thanks, Jan...See MoreLong post...advice about ex husbands' visit
Comments (16)Thanks everyone for your insight and input. Your comments fit right in with what friends tell me but I kind of wanted to get an unbiased opinion from people who don't know me. I have to agree that the whole thing is creepy and fishy. I cannot imagine not seeing or contacting my children for such a long time in the first place, but of course he says that is all my fault. I can't imagine not wanting to spend every second with them if I hadn't seen them in such a long time. He is such a creep. I have heard over and over again that I had no right to "take his children" away from him and that because of ME he has no relationship with them. Ummm...not buying that one buddy. When I was growing up I had one Grandma in the UK, one across the country and both of them managed to create and maintain a relationship with me back in the days when there was no email, no free/cheap long distance, and certainly little face-to-face contact. I seldom saw them but when I did we were comfortable with each other because we had a long-standing relationship. Why were my Grandmothers able to do that and my ex is not able to do so with his own children?? Because it was a priority to my Grandmas to nurture a bond and it obviously isn't a priority for him. He takes the easy way out by blaming it on someone else. Unfortunately what this entire situation has taught me is that the legal system is really, really messed up. Even though he has abused and stalked me, I CANNOT keep him away from his children because he has never "harmed" his children. I was warned of that in court by the judge who oversaw our case...my God, how could his behavior have NOT harmed our children? So the option of not allowing unsupervised visits is really not an option. As many of you already know, the court will not back me up until AFTER something happens. That really sucks. Anyway, I've decided that I will email him and tell him that his plans are not acceptable. I will drop the boys off and pick them up...haven't decided if it will be at the hotel or at the police station. I'm going to stop by the station this week and find out what the police would be willing to do...actually I had already planned on explaining the situation to them in advance of his arrival but I need to check if I can do the drop off/pick up there. My boyfriend has already insisted that he be with me no matter where the exchange occurs, even if it is the police station....See MoreHad a long talk with DH about cabinets. Need advice.
Comments (19)Usually, but not always, both lowes and HD will meet a price you found on the internet if you bring it in. The layout you do in the ikea kitchen designer doesn't generally include fillers, or matching color end panels (called cover panels). Or decorative trim like crown or light rail. You buy cover panels for all exposed ends. The cover panels are in the designer, but you need to add it to the appropriate cabinets. If you want a door panel, you buy a full height door for a 24" or 12" cabinet. The designer not let you select this piece but your ikean order clerk can. Because they are frameless, you might need to start a run with a small filler - called a starter molding - if the side of the cabinet is against a wall. This insures that your doors and drawers won't hit the wall. The kitchen design price list also includes toe kick covers, countertop and hardware unless you specify not to on each cabinet. Things like hinges, drawers, wire pull outs or shelves show up as separately priced items. Refrigerator enclosures can be made from oven side panels. If you don't like their door styles, you can buy the doors, cover panels, moldings and toe kicks from another company. We bought our doors from scherrs as have many others. The doors took about two weeks to make and ship. For the doors and drawer fronts and a decorative end, we paid about three hundred dollars more than ikea would have charged for the doors and drawers, but we got all solid wood, mitered cherry doors and drawer fronts. We bought the doors finished, but not stained. We added some fillers from a local source. You can also design up your kitchen in the ikea designer or any other way you'd like, but get scherrs to make better quality cabinets for you. The thing with going that way is you can customize the width, height or depth of any cabinet and/or get special pieces made or fancy trim. We had scherrs cabinets in the kitchen that was destroyed and I loved them. They used to be about 1/3 less than Kraftmaid. We ended up doing the blended ikea=scherrs because ikea is less than 30 minutes away and I didn't want to wait even an extra month to special order....See MoreMold in friend's home--who's at fault? Comments (31)Update: The repairman is correcting drainage in the back yard, although my friend says that he's convinced that water infiltration was not the issue, and the vapor barrier will correct the problem. I don't think the window/wall AC was allowing water to infiltrate, or at least it didn't appear to be when I cleaned it, but it was letting in humid air and mold spores from the outside. I'm not totally convinced about the AC, though. We have two small rooms on the south side of our house, which are not air conditioned (or heated unless temps are consistently below freezing). Both are used as air locks to exterior doors in the winter, with a window kept open in each during the summer. In the larger of the two, the mudroom, I keep a window fan running most of the time in the summer, but I know that humid air enters when the fan isn't running, and I've never had mold in that room. However, it's an enclosed, glazed brick porch on a slab, so no crawl space. The smaller room is at the end of a new addition, is framed on three sides, joins the glazed brick on the other side, and is over a crawl space with a sump pump. It will eventually be two smaller areas--a 5x7 bathroom and an air lock entry, but it's currently being used as a tool room. No mold issues there, either, so experience tells me that it's not just humid air that's causing the mold bloom in my friend's house....See Moremaire_cate
