win10 and windows defender

installed win 10 and was doing some clean up when a cc cleaner update popped up, like a fool I clicked on it and it started downloading all kinds of crap. Until I caught it and ran malware bytes, it had already infected my machine and now I cannot get win defender to turn on. Is there a way to do this?

Click on windows icon on far left of taskbar, type in search bar defender or windows defender both work, then click on windows defender settings and go from there.

I have never had a virus until I started prepping for W10. When I start downloading my software, I got something that locked up my toolbar, safesearch I think and wajam. I did a system restore, then a friend told me it was still in restore and told me how to get rid of it there. Later I picked up a virus with no name, it just had gen in the name with other stuff. It froze my Avast and my PC. I waited a few minutes and I was able to use IE. Downloaded Adware cleaner and that took care of the second one.

I give up. I'm going to wheedle the money to take this machine to a repair shop. I fail to understand that if you think the user is the problem, PEBCAK, that you would bother to respond. There are too many problems for me to resolve from the Win10 uninstall. The uninstall was recommended by Microsoft Tech Support after he failed to help me fix Mail, Calendar, Cortana, People apps during a 2 1/2 Hour phone call. Since last Sept. I've been trying to get this machine to work as it should. I've spent many hours on MS site, looking for articles on other sites that address our problems. My husband and I have spent many hours searching and trying to resolve these problems. 5 months. The last thing we need is snarky comments, snotty opinions and in general, erroneous assumptions. This was always a place for us to come to ask for help. It's not any longer, and the pointless crap is a waste of time when we have spent so much of it trying to fix this ourselves. Many thanks to those of you who asked specific questions and gave good advice and shared your knowledge. You are truly a God send to those of us who need help.

Win 10 and trying to get photos off the IPhone??

Kidzu, of course I tried that. What I get are a thousand little tiny boxes. When I click on them I get one photo that is so small I can't tell if its worth keeping. It won't enlarge. Plus, each photo is in a separate box so it requires clicking on these tiny boxes one at a time. I have over 1000 photos on my phone and many I do not want on my computer. I tried following the directions from Google. I can't tell what is what. When I plug in the phone a screen comes up full of photos with check marks. I can't tell if I'm looking at the phone or explorer. The only heading on the page is 'photo collection.' Over 1200 photos all containing check marks. If I click 'clear' and try to individually check the photos I want, it still imports all the photos. It states that the photos will be saved in a folder under my name. I'll be dammed if I can find them. I've had it with Win 10. This is ridiculous. Before I could copy what I wanted into the folders I wanted. Now I can't tell if I'm looking at the pics on the phone or on Windows. There is no information. I deleted multiple copies of the same photos and they keep reappearing. The system sucks. I simply want to copy manually what I want to copy and save in the folders I choose. Stupid, dumb and typical Microsoft! Thanks, no reply is necessary. Jane

What worked for Win 7 should work for Win 10 as well. Are you wanting to make a change? If yes, why? I've been using free avast! for almost 2 years and have made my peace with it, but it has issues. You will see ads nearly every day begging you to upgrade. A standard install comes with features you probably don't want or need and you'll have to figure out how to uninstall them. avast! likes to add/change things without asking (agreeing to the EULA give them the right to) and a lot of their users get ticked off when it happens. I've stuck with it so far because the antivirus hasn't let me down yet, but mostly because they have a VERY ACTIVE forum where you can ask questions/air grievances. Prior to avast! I used Avira which was pretty good but they also got very forceful about getting users to start paying them $.

Using Norton - +3 points (I started using McAfee on some of my PCs a few months ago because I get it for free from ISP #2, and I'd run out of licenses from ISP #1 when I bought a few new machines. It's not bad, very Norton-like and slightly better performance score from PCMag.) Your good experience with IE and Edge - Just a head scratch, they've sucked for a few years now and IE/Edge users have been switching to other browsers in droves. Especially with the erratic behavior on some websites. That's what triggered the unprecedented move by Microsoft. Just for fun a few minutes ago, on a PC that hasn't upgraded yet, I tried to log on to a financial account I have using the old Edge (updated). After entering my username and password, the log-on was blocked with a message "Your browser isn't supported, use Firefox or Chrome". I did that for a reason, I'd seen the same thing happen 6 months ago when not paying attention to what browser I'd been using and remembered having that experience. Enjoy your new Chrome browser! (left out - Yes, everyone finds approaches and happiness different ways. When n=1, it's an anecdotal experience to be skeptical and careful with, even when it's your own experience)

Never mind, I ditched win 10 and went back to 8.1, all is well.

I right-clicked my Recycle Bin, opened CCleaner and upgraded to the new version. The only thing it tried pushing off on me was Google Chrome, but it was easy enough to deselect.

Just reporting how it went for me. I have no idea why that happened to you.

Did the pop-up happen to look anything like this?

Since when is CCleaner a virus? I've been using it for years on all our computers.

Right, CCleaner is not a virus. The pop-up I posted above is fake. It uses CCleaner's good reputation to trick a user into doing an upgrade that is not really an CCleaner update. It installs malware.

What actually happened in Christopher, I don't know, the fake installer pop-up was just my guess.

I am sure it was a pop up that I just didn't catch. It just was not THAT one. It seems to happen a lot with CCleaner, so beware.
