effective but free anti-virus for Win 10?

My laptop (Win 7) died, so in getting a new one, I now have Win 10. Also had to acquire Office 2016.

My computer activity is limited to word processing, making Power
Point presentations, & online research (gardens, insects & plant
disease). No gaming.

I've always relied on free anti-virus through the years and now
wonder what is effective for this new software/OS. Please advise.

I don't see many ads from Avast. Do a Custom Install and unselect components that aren't wanted, eliminates the need to uninstall them after-the-fact.

What worked for Win 7 should work for Win 10 as well. Are you wanting to make a change? If yes, why?

I've been using free avast! for almost 2 years and have made my peace with it, but it has issues. You will see ads nearly every day begging you to upgrade. A standard install comes with features you probably don't want or need and you'll have to figure out how to uninstall them. avast! likes to add/change things without asking (agreeing to the EULA give them the right to) and a lot of their users get ticked off when it happens. I've stuck with it so far because the antivirus hasn't let me down yet, but mostly because they have a VERY ACTIVE forum where you can ask questions/air grievances. Prior to avast! I used Avira which was pretty good but they also got very forceful about getting users to start paying them $.

Windows 10 has Window defender already on it(at least mine did). Seem to be doing its job.

If you are interested and willing to search (Google or Bing), check out some of the articles on AGDIA, which is a company that makes tests for viruses and other diseases of plants. You can see the PCR and ELISA tests that are available for roses (and for many other plants.) Do you know the word "Synergy"? Not the new age version, but the science based synergy- there are some interesting plant pathology sites out there as well. Briefly, Synergy means that diseaseA has X symptoms and disease B has Y symptoms, but when a plant has diseases A&B, the plant will not have a simple mix of X and Y symptoms, but often will also have new (call them Z) symptoms that may be worse that the sum of X and Y. Where does that leave rose growers? It leaves rose growers wanting to keep their plants as healthy as possible so that no even more damaging symptoms appear. Years ago a simple study was done in California roses. Under optimum conditions, roses with a single virus (as tested for back then) produced ten to fifteen per cent fewer blooms. That, economically, was reason to keep the plants as clean as possible. And to the root to root transmission: Google Scholar papers by Giolino (author), roses, and the time period last ten years.

ok you must have something else too in addition to the antivirus 2009 this is another program we use to clean this stuff it is also free get it and use it to scan. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware v1.18 should be able to remove this pest ... download it to the desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. Tom, To reassure you that a DUN connection is OK with AVG: I am a rural America resident on an antique DUN with a download speed of 5kb/sec. (Laughing is now allowed) I use AVG on this Vista system and Avast on a Win98 system out in the garage. Updating is not a concern with either application. They are rarely over perhaps 200kb unless I have been negligent as I do them manually. There is a time once in a while when application upgrades are released and the download takes a while; perhaps 15-20 minutes. As far as downloading the application itself, any time I have something of size I do it first thing on a Sunday morning. Even before shower and coffee. By the time the rest of the world is up I am finished. Patience is a virtue. :) DA All in all I have to say no problem.

For what you do on the Computer, Windows Defender should be fine! Windows Defender comes preinstalled on New Computers and Upgraded Computers have it installed too! If you don't have an Anti-Virus Program installed, Windows Defender will automatically protect your computer. Windows Defender is a No Brainer, it will also automatically Update for you ever time you turn your computer on!

BTW, I would also Download and Install Malwarebytes (Free Version). Between Windows Defender and Malwarebytes you should be well protected!

Thank you all.

One of the first things I always check on a new computer is the security setting but I didn't see evidence of Defender. Don't know why, but will definitely take another look.

I've used the free Malwarebytes previously and have been pleased with the results. It's already on my to-do list.

Avast...I've used it for 4-5 years and it has stopped a number of potential infections in real time.

Any of the three free A's, Avast, Avira or AVG would be just fine.
