Sounds like he put on the trial version of the paid version. Go to this link Download.com and download the free version then uninstall the paid version and install the free version.

thanks so my guess was correct? there's a free version and a pay version? why not uninstall the current version of avg and then download and install the free version? time to download on 56k modem?

i assume the free version does allow updates? like i said, it'd be worthless imo if it did not.

I have AVG 8.0 free edition and I definitely get updates.

i think doing the download on a 56k connection is not a good idea. i just updated to firefox mozilla ver 3. on 76 kb connection 9 mb took about 2 minutes. the avg download is 92 mb iirc so it'll take a long time on dial up.

Tom you could always download the free AVG to a thumb drive on your computer and take to the other computer. Then it would be just a case of downloading the updates. The updates may well take a few minutes too of course.

Alternately have your sister download early in the morning when there are less users and the download speed will be faster. If she set it to download then went off to breakfast or whatever the time really would not matter.

i don't have any peripherals to download to and take to her. she's often up late getting home from a 2nd shift part time job so maybe starting the download at 1 am and going to bed would be a good way if it's done on dial up. she ordered dsl but att sent the modem to the wrong address so she still does not have the equipment but perhaps in the next week she'll have dsl then it should be must faster.

I had a very difficult time d/l AVG 8.0 with my dialup connection - even letting it run over night. I finally went to the library and d/l it and brought it home on a thumb drive.

If she is getting DSL soon, I would wait. She is still protected, just not getting any new updates.

To reassure you that a DUN connection is OK with AVG:

I am a rural America resident on an antique DUN with a download speed of 5kb/sec. (Laughing is now allowed) I use AVG on this Vista system and Avast on a Win98 system out in the garage. Updating is not a concern with either application. They are rarely over perhaps 200kb unless I have been negligent as I do them manually.

There is a time once in a while when application upgrades are released and the download takes a while; perhaps 15-20 minutes.

As far as downloading the application itself, any time I have something of size I do it first thing on a Sunday morning. Even before shower and coffee. By the time the rest of the world is up I am finished. Patience is a virtue. :)

All in all I have to say no problem.

If it has not been mentioned before, make sure that all traces of Nortons has been uninstalled before installing any other Antivirus programs or conflicts will surely happen.
You might also consider Avast free (make sure its the free version) as there have been reports of people having difficulties with the new AVG 8.0 version
