avg anti virus question

i bought my sister a pc with explorer as the os from a local computer shop where i had my pc built in april 08. he wanted to put norton on but since avg is free and from what i have heard as good as symantec i told him put on avg.

well she now has a pop up window saying her 30 day free trial is over and she can't get any updates. it seems to me that if the free avg antivirus software will not allow you to get free updates then what good is it?

did he load a pay version and we need to download the free version? this is my assumption. seems i'd want to uninstall the current avg before downloading the free avg? she has dial up with netzero and is in the process of getting dsl. is the download too big to do on a 56k modem?

i have "norton 2008 with antivirus spyware" and never even seen avg so i have no idea what it is about.

Sounds like he put on the trial version of the paid version. Go to this link Download.com and download the free version then uninstall the paid version and install the free version.

thanks so my guess was correct? there's a free version and a pay version? why not uninstall the current version of avg and then download and install the free version? time to download on 56k modem?

i assume the free version does allow updates? like i said, it'd be worthless imo if it did not.

AR, Your welcome as always. Remember to use CC in its default settings only and consider not using the registry utility unless you are familiar with the registry entries themselves. Also, let's not forget about error-checking. My Computer>right click on C:/ drive>Properties>Tools tab>Error-Checking Check Now>check both boxes>Start>Yes>Reboot system This maintenance service takes a while so don't plan on sitting and watching it. Lynn if you are happy with McAfee then keep it, I in fact have McAfee on one of my windows computers because I too get it free with my Verizon fios, when I get tired of it or if something goes wacky with it I know I can always just start using one of the free ones like Avast, would not use the new AVG8. There have in the past been problems with McAfee, they have sent out some updates that caused problems on some computers, but they were pretty quick to fix them. I do not use their firewall I use an older version of zonealarm pro. Site advisor has nothing to do with your McAFee suite it is an add on for your browser, you download it from the site I provided in the other thread and simply select which browser you are using and use the download for that browser, Since you are currently using IE get the one that says for Ie, when you decide to get firefox then go and get the one that says for firefox it will then add it to firefox also. it is super simple to do basically one click. It is free for everyone. as to your husbands laptop that would be totally up to you or him. IF he wants to pay for trend micro it is a good program however I think there are free versions that can handle the job like the Avast free. I would probably do that instead of putting AOL on there if he does not need it, AOL is bad about digging into the innards of the pc and when not needed I don't advise putting it on. Now to your daughters pc are you sure you have the McAfee suite actually installed on that pc? I would try logging in with your name since it is under your subscription often times the main user has to do that to enable subscriptions. IF you can not get it to work then make sure you completely remove it from the pc before you install any other antivirus program that goes for any of the computers always completely remove the prior antivirus, you do not want more than one on a pc. McAfee has a detailed directions page on how to uninstall their products. this is the directions you may want to print and keep available. 1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel". 2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe). This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool) 3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one! In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming 4. Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products directly from your account at the McAfee web site or your ISP, NOT from any CD that you may have. How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe).

Dennis, thanks for a well laid out list of problems. It does help those who feel they can see some or all of your problems. AVG is by far the most popular free anti virus and I doubt that is your issue. I would not remove that one. Spyware Doctor I know nothing about. If you have the original CD or the download stored on your computer you could remove it entirely using the Add/Remove and see if that helps at all. Superantispyware and or Malwarebytes could be alternatives to trying Spybot Search & Destroy. If you use Spybot S&D be sure it is in fact that program and not a sound alike rogue program. Have you ran any cleaners at all? Not registry cleaners but the Disk cleanup in the Accessories/System Tools folder of XP. Try that and a defrag, it will help modestly. Do you have Google or Yahoo toolbars and are they allowed to run in the background? The Google Toolbar has either 3 or 4 entries in your Startup and using your resources. Click Start click Run type msconfig click OK click the Startup tab Now check each of these items and decide if they do in fact need to run. Google each entry before deciding to stop one because if you stop the wrong ones the computer may not start again. If you stop any you need to reboot. During the reboot you will get a dire warning, do not be alarmed, place a check mark not to see it again and continue the booting.

ok glad to hear that.

i think doing the download on a 56k connection is not a good idea. i just updated to firefox mozilla ver 3. on 76 kb connection 9 mb took about 2 minutes. the avg download is 92 mb iirc so it'll take a long time on dial up.

Tom you could always download the free AVG to a thumb drive on your computer and take to the other computer. Then it would be just a case of downloading the updates. The updates may well take a few minutes too of course.

Alternately have your sister download early in the morning when there are less users and the download speed will be faster. If she set it to download then went off to breakfast or whatever the time really would not matter.

Do not uninstall then download or you will be online with no protection. Download, close the internet connection, remove the current version and install the free one. Connect and look for updates.

Connect and look for updates.ok i never considered that assuming the time w/o avg would be not an issue but i suppose being connected to the net does expose you to risk.

i don't have any peripherals to download to and take to her. she's often up late getting home from a 2nd shift part time job so maybe starting the download at 1 am and going to bed would be a good way if it's done on dial up. she ordered dsl but att sent the modem to the wrong address so she still does not have the equipment but perhaps in the next week she'll have dsl then it should be must faster.

I had a very difficult time d/l AVG 8.0 with my dialup connection - even letting it run over night. I finally went to the library and d/l it and brought it home on a thumb drive.

If she is getting DSL soon, I would wait. She is still protected, just not getting any new updates.

To reassure you that a DUN connection is OK with AVG:

I am a rural America resident on an antique DUN with a download speed of 5kb/sec. (Laughing is now allowed) I use AVG on this Vista system and Avast on a Win98 system out in the garage. Updating is not a concern with either application. They are rarely over perhaps 200kb unless I have been negligent as I do them manually.

There is a time once in a while when application upgrades are released and the download takes a while; perhaps 15-20 minutes.

As far as downloading the application itself, any time I have something of size I do it first thing on a Sunday morning. Even before shower and coffee. By the time the rest of the world is up I am finished. Patience is a virtue. :)

If it has not been mentioned before, make sure that all traces of Nortons has been uninstalled before installing any other Antivirus programs or conflicts will surely happen.
You might also consider Avast free (make sure its the free version) as there have been reports of people having difficulties with the new AVG 8.0 version
