Help us change colors of this pink house-please!
This is a long post--just want to provide lots of information but hope it isn't confusing.
We moved into our home recently in the Central Coast of California and liked everything EXCEPT the pink exterior, so are planning to repaint it. We live in a development of Mediterranean style homes and we need to stay in the family of colors already established in the neighborhood. Warm pastels are the standard, and while some homes are painted in neutral beige/taupe tones or white/cream, there are no gray (with blue tones) or cool colors on the exterior walls of the homes.
The roof reads overall as a light gray/taupe. It is the Santa Clara Blend by Hanson Tile (2nd photo). FYI, the garage doors are painted metal. The shutters are wood, and I am considering adding hardware. The windows are white clad vinyl ones, and I wish we had a darker color, but I have noticed that the white is not as bothersome on neighbor's homes that are painted in lighter shades.
Landscaping: I also think we need additional landscaping near the entrance to balance things where the blank wall to the right of the entrance is. And we plan to ;in the drive with a plants too. In general, we will be adding plants and getting rid of the amount of grass. We will add some large pots near the garage.
Lighting: We will add larger light fixtures, maybe darker ones.
Please help us a choose a new color scheme. We would consider a treatment that would add character, giving the effect of a lime wash for instance.
THIS IS OUR CURRENT PINK HOUSE:
This is the roof color, although there is a little more variation in it than the photo on a monitor shows. The blend seems to vary in the colors of gray/taupe and a color that leans toward rose/taupe.
Here is an example of the same floor plan painted a neutral color. We can't do this exactly because the two homes on each side of us on painted in similar colors, but I like the look overall, and the white window frames look better here.
The following photos give you an idea of the color palette in the development. We don't want to use too many colors, but prefer a more subdued, classic look.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI recommend this color combination for stucco, shutters and window trim, and that you also consider correlating planters & a wall trellis over the garage doors to soften the appearance of those huge garage doors. Keep the stained garage door finish. I would upgrade the light fixtures.
Please note the mottled appearance of the walls. There's a special paint that can create that appearance.

Comments (11)The problem isn't so much that it's orange, but rather that there is so much of it showing. You'll never hide the fact that it's the foundation walls by painting it to match the siding. Paint it a darker color in green or brown and then--and this is the most important part--plant something!!!! You need sizable plants to camouflage the foundation--not necessarily a solid hedge, but something in front to draw the eye. Comments (18)I don't think you can fit two sofas in the room with the TV. Place the TV and console in the same place the current owners had it. Then look for a sectional or one long sofa with floating chairs to use at either end. Make sure the seating stays in the main area of the room and not in the walkways (no chair by the stairs). I think painting before they move in makes a lot of sense as long as they choose neutral light colors. Narrow down your options though - you don't need 11 whites to choose from. The only thing I might respectfully disagree with you on is in regards to the first 3 pictures (and arguably the gauge in the mudroom). I’ve had hand scraped floors before and never had (or seen) marks like those. Also, those marks are there and in one other place nearby and they look nothing like the “light hand scraping” everywhere else in the house. It looks like they drug a giant pitch fork along the floor twice. I’m trying to decide if we could get away with leaving them. That’s what I’m not sure of since it’s only in those 2 places and they’re so different. You can’t see it when standing directly over it, but you definitely see it and know it shouldn’t be there when you take a step or two away from it. Can the guys still fill holes and gaps now that final poly was done? And by filling gaps, are you also referencing the space between stairs and risers as well as where the stairs meet the wall? Comments (9)Thanks for all the reply’s. Here’s a few pictures of houses that I like, I think the house would still scream pink to me if I painted it the lightest paint color of the tile. They are so pink 😱 I love the pergola, our back porch is an odd shape, the pool is to close to the back doors so the columns are close to the slider resulting in difficult furniture placement. It’s a huge back yard, the original owners added an addition, wish they would have pushed the pool back more so we could entertain better....See More

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI actually think the pink is kind of suitable, and would consider trying different door, shutter and trim colors. Photos 1 and 2 are nice, but I don't care for the mixed colors of 3, 4, or 5.
Beverly's palette is nice as well. But I think I should try shades of grey on the trim and doors first in Photoshop or Paint first. The Isabella Steward Gardner house is actually pink, although it appears a bit washed out here:

8 years agopalimpest, I often agree with you, and a soft shell pink might work for this home, but look at the comparison................................nankmoss's home is MAUVE not shell pink. It's a heavy color and doesn't enhance the wood finish on the shutters or garage door.

8 years agoI could live in any of the three houses Beverly posted. Our vintage Spanish house is soft white and brick red. I would have loved fuchsia, but want to stay married. I also like softer white with greet like this:

8 years agoI can understand not wanting pink...the Gardner Museum is pinker than the picture I first posted, and also mottled. It changes a lot depending upon the light.
One thing that I would try to avoid is going too French. A couple of the schemes are definitely French and not Italian

8 years agoBeverly, thank you! I will start researching those products and also find out what painters here have experience with them. I love all of your examples--thank you so much. I definitely like the character this will add! I keep being drawn to green shutters but I will try others too since I think there is so much green in the landscape (well if the drought ever ends, that is!). Another of my likes:
