A Good Space to Learn Lacto Fermenting

All the places I look want to sell me the special air-lock lids to ferment. There must be another way since we've been fermenting for eons, "we" used in the relation to humans. I fermented cucumbers last year and had a hard time locating a place on my farm that was less than 75F. NC is known for high humidity and high air temps throughout the summer when the cucumbers are harvested. My refrigerator is too cold at 38F, and even my below ground walk out basement stays at 78F in the summer even with 8" thick walls. Any suggestions? I also tried a second-hand wine cooler but it would not stay at the low temp needed and fluctuated radically over the weeks - 45F to 85F -- not a good bargain at $25 for what I think is needed for constant temp fermentation. I don't have a problem with low air temps in the winter but the cukes aren't ripe then!!!
