Pics of my lawn. So far, so good!!

Here's some pics of my front lawn as of today. I have Bermuda. As of a week ago, I wasn't all that thrilled with how it was looking. I had dead seed heads that were giving it a brownish look. Cutting the seed heads with my manual reel mower was hit or miss. It was time for me to get some more fertilizer and even though JDL suggested 24-0-11, I went with Lesco 32-0-8 which has 2% iron. I was running Lesco 29-0-3 before. I applied and watered about a half an inch last Monday 6/22. I went out of town this past weekend and we got 3+ inches of rain. I came home Sunday and it was long and green. I cut it with my manual reel set at 1" last night and this is what it looks like. I plan on applying milorganite in a week. I also applied cracked corn in early spring when the grass was just starting to green and I will probably do another app in September as one of my last feedings.

Looks like you are doing something right. Did you plant them all at the same time or different times? It looks like you have almost three different groupings. Maybe just different varieties? Bruce

athens....IMO....something isn't right some where. With your house still under construction with the doors and windows opened so often, that just doesn't add up especially with that much sf! I have a 14 SEER(one unit) and a much smaller house at 1600sf and mine runs more than that. How much is your kwh? You're in Athens and I'm beside Charlotte, so our winters are basically the same.

Thanks grandms & mikie. Actually, when I turned on the computer today there was a notice from MS to DL IE7. Must be huge, it took 5 min. with cable connection. I like the ability to make print bigger and smaller. That always worked well on GW and email but didn't work on most sites. But now EVERYTHING is too big. This post, that looked normal last night now has me scrolling back and forth to read! Hoping someone can lead me to a setting to change? Or maybe I should start a new thread? Sandy

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. After the seed head infestation I was thinking this year would be a loss. Amazing how fast things can turn around.

Very impressive. Have you leveled your lawn in the past or does the manual reel mower really make that much difference in not getting any scalped spots due to slightly lower areas?

I have never leveled my yard and it definitely isn't level. It's hard to make out in the top picture but you can see where the grass looks kind of wavy. I believe that's from low spots and also from the cutting blade bouncing a bit because of thick grass. Regardless, no way I could cut my yard that low with a rotary without getting the scalped crop circles. A reel makes that big of a difference.

What type of manual reel do you have? I've been considering getting one to play around with. My lawn is fairly bumpy and I get some nice scalping in areas from my rotary.

Nice sherm. Something to be concerned about...from your top picture do you have a good idea why the spot at the lower center edge is spotty? If you don't know exactly why it's like that I would look for chinch bugs. YouTube has some very helpful videos about searching for them and what they look like. I suggest turning the sound off for most of the videos, because those guys don't have your best interest in mind. They are selling chemicals and their services.

Coreman I have an American bent grass specialty mower or something like that. It's a 7 blade mower that is meant for creeping grass like Bermuda that needs to be mowed low. It is also branded as Great States. You can find it on Amazon. I lucked up and got mine off of craigslist.

Dchall, I'm not sure about those spots. All I know is they've been filling in so I haven't worried too much about them. I'll take a look into chinch bugs though. Thanks!!

What is your recommended treatment for chinch bugs?

Chinch bugs like hot soil, so keeping the area cool with deep watering is key. It might need to be a little deeper next to the sidewalk and drive way. After you get them, it's different. I've never had them but I would try attracting birds to that area. Birds like bird baths and seed feeders. If you can't attract enough birds to the spot, then beneficial nematodes. I like the ones called Guardian Lawn Patrol or something like that. Company is in Colorado. Beneficial nematodes carry a disease that kills the bugs within 24 hours. Nobody tells you this but they must be applied to saturated soil. If you apply to dry soil, you just wasted your money.
