Reporting back on my 15 SEER heat pumps - so far so good!

I did a lot of thinking/laboring over insulation/airsealing/heating and cooling choices. We have gotten 3 electric bills since the heat pumps were installed (house is still under construction), and the bills have ranged between 19.00 and 24.00 a month! They just put the bulbs in the lights over the past couple of weeks, and it has been a mild winter here, but there have been lots of doors and windows left open by contractors, etc., and we have no landscaping/window treatments, etc. Obviously, these will go up, but WOW is all I can say!

Just fyi, those bills are for heat pumps set at 70 (hotter than I would have set them but the contractor did that), 4 systems and over 8000 heated/cooled square feet (part of this is finished to sheetrock level only).

Very impressed so far!!!

What brand 15 seer heat pump did you go with, if you don't mind me asking?

Cas How old is downstairs system? I see no urgency on replacing upstairs system especially since it serves a living area that is not used often. If you haven't done this already, you should a good PM/checkup performed on the upstairs system. I find the Rheem quote on the high side. I don't recommend going up in size unless ductwork has been thoroughly checked especially on size both supply and return to see if it can handle the additional CFMs. Obviously correct sizing is important. If you are unsure, then request a load calculation or even perform it yourself for a nominal fee online. there are three equally important components-quality HVAC, the install by dealer, and probably the most overlooked and disregarded is the ductwork system. these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant line set you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would only use authorized dealers for the various brands that provide quotes. see mfg websites. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. Depending on your location, I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost. Carrier does not. IMO

I would pay $100 for Trane's Perfect Fit Media filter Cabinet. It is very heavy duty compared to the Honeywell and sized to fit the furnace like a hand fits a glove. Less about the filters and more about the fit and quality of cabinet. I do believe the Trane takes a 5" filter, the HW a 4" filter. BTW, I have the Trane. Very easy to replace old filter. As far as thermostat, first choice would be HW VP Prestige IAQ, 2nd choice would be HW Mdl 8321 (same as Trane 803).. I like the IAQ because it is a true two stage thermostat, has dehumidify on demand feature for AC cooling, and can handle the control of an add on HW humidifier. Discuss carefully with your dealer. This is a nice system you are getting. The AHRI directory site is down for maintenance or else I would look up the matching AHRI number. I would ask dealer to give you the matching number and the performance/efficiency numbers for AC. Still believe you should get a quote on a Carrier Infinity. IMO

The Trane is an XR13 heat pump, 1.5 tons. The air handler match puts out 19,000 btu cooling (1000 btu more than a full 1.5 tons), 11 EER, 13 SEER, 16,500 btu heating at 47 degrees (1500 btu short of a full 1.5 tons), 7.7 HSPF, 16,500 btu heating at 17 degrees. This is Trane's basic heat pump. The Westinghouse model#s are bad/incomplete. They make an FT4BD condenser. There are digits missing in the model#s. I can't make anything out of the Armstrong air handler model#. The condenser is a 2 ton. You have quotes for a 1.5 ton and a 2 ton system. I need more info to compare the 3. Good luck.

athens....IMO....something isn't right some where. With your house still under construction with the doors and windows opened so often, that just doesn't add up especially with that much sf! I have a 14 SEER(one unit) and a much smaller house at 1600sf and mine runs more than that. How much is your kwh? You're in Athens and I'm beside Charlotte, so our winters are basically the same.

I am thinking the same as Robin. I'm sure your bills will be low but lets not expect miracles. Jan has been pretty warm.

Generally my builder turns on the hvac a few days before move in because what contractors would do (ie open windows and a/c) and because insulation is not final yet. My electric bill was higher than yours just from the contractors equipment and area lights.

I realize that we are very warm here now for winter (although it is 32 degrees today) but I have the bills in front of me. Our hvac has been running for several months because of the hardwood floors and the need to get the house acclimated.

Not sure how to explain it . . .

Wouldn't the elect bills be in the GC's name until the closing?

Not sure - but he sends them to me to be paid as part of his pay application. He doesn't front the cost if that is what you mean.

I agree with David. Ours have been much higher due to all the contractors' equipment. The trim contractors were there for days with all their saws, the flooring contractor's sander, etc.

We have had the same thing with trim contractors, saws, etc. along with tile people and saws and hardwood floor people and saws (we have a herringbone foyer that was ripped from the regular 5" oak). Maybe there will be a big jump but the HVAC was turned on in December. . .

Is there any solar involved? If not, there must be something wrong with the meter.
