Keep in mind that a dark floor can look dusty. I would do something light or medium range.

If you had hardwood and liked it, and your budget allows for it, why not look into the tile that looks like wood. It's beautiful, not as pricey as one might assume and a great alternative for a space like a basement.

lukki, I have similar tiles in my TV room. I pride myself in having them before they became popular. This room is off the garage, so gets a lot of traffic.

I am thinking that the OP has kids and if they are going to be playing down there, ceramic tiles are very hard and a child could get hurt falling on it.

I like the wood look tile! for kids that might tumble, an area rug/runner is a good short term solution.

I personally would look into medium- or darker for the floors... either ceramic/porc or laminate/Armstrong alterna/etc.... I would look into something like a faux travertine or faux marble or faux wood as mentioned above which has some color variation ... but, really- light or dark could look very nice with macadamia (which is medium toned).

Thanks everyone, I am leaning toward porcelain tile athough the faux wood vinyl is attractive (and nothing is literally set in stone yet) and also easily removed should the next owner decide to change things up a bit. Children aren't a big issue, although I am a grandmother.

Original flooring (before the flood) was carpet, which I hated. I am leaning towards tile b/c I want something completely impervious to moisture with extended durability.

I am painting macadamia in the foyer/halls -- it's super neutral and will look good with either light or dark flooring-- I would look at your furniture to help you decide what flooring to put down rather than just the wall color...

Thank you, busybee. Currently there is no furniture in this room, other than my computer table. I chose macademia b/c it was very close to bm bleeker beige, which my daughter has in her guestroom with dark blue and white color scheme. This way, I can go blue or browns, or even some reds.
