Need help for flooring choice - show me your floors!

Hi All,

I'm about to stick a fork in my eye and am completley over whelmed by floor choices. Mostly because whats on line looks different in sample and vs. versa. I am looking for a wide plank or varied width floor. Not to yellow or not too red informally style think vintage\reclaimed (but can't afford the "real" relcaimed). Medium tone of wood with variance of light and dark so it gives the feel of old flooring. Would love to see photos of acutal installs. Also has anyone installed Armstrong Laminate? looking at the architectural reminants collection in old original dark but concerned about resale down the road. Help please need to decide before the end of the week.

My son has installed Amtico vinyl by Mannington. He thinks that is a good product. I have a wood look laminate plank floor. It is very nice but I am careful with it. If it gets wet it can warp. Depends on were your putting it. It is easy to install. We are going to remodel in spring and am really considering Amtico vinyl plank. Durable,can handle water and grand kids, dog and cat. It is also a less expensive choice for us.

It's going in all living areas of my first floor except bathrooms. I'll check that one online

Both those colors are more in the medium range in the color spectrum. Since you said lighter and that you hate the amber color which one would assume you are looking at a warm tone with a hint of red. My suggestion is to check out nutmeg from duraseal. Now it doesnt have to be duraseal but thats what i work with so thats what i can speak about with confidence. I believe nutmeg is a "stock" color most brands carry. If looking for somthing darker. Chestnut is a happy medium between nutmeg and medium brown. If your floor guy is any good he should just show you any color you want right ON your floor. Looking at a sample board or little swatches can be decieving because onecolor on a new floor will have a different look and feel on a floor thats 50 yrds old

Actually, I already have tile and I don't have a problem with it. I'm not crazy about what I have, so I'm thinking about replacing it with something more updated. mtnrdredux - For a long time I felt like I would get travertine when I got around to replacing my floors. When it came down to it, I decided I didn't want to deal with sealing it. chispa - I don't think I've ever seen that brand. Annie - I love the look of your floors. It reminds me of the smooth travertine floors as opposed to the rustic type. I've been looking for something with a calm pattern similar to dedtired's floors, but yet enough pattern and color to hide dirt. I found one I like, but I'm thinking it may look more busy than what I initially thought I wanted. The variation is a 4, which is the highest number. Looking at one tile, it's not overly busy, but who knows once the whole floor is laid. I really like the darker color, but I think the lighter color looks better with my countertop.

Ladies & Gentlemen... After perusing this site for a NUMBER of months, I have finally decided on cabinets and a counterop :) Phew! I like a clean modern look, so I am going to use dark cabinets (walnut-colored) with a marble (danby statuary or calcutta) countertop and a raised white subway tile backsplash. I have a ge monogram stove, jenn air micro and dishwasher, and a viking fridge. The appliances are all stainless with those uber-cool handles. The draw pulls will be those long skinny ones that mirror the handles on the appliances. The inspiration for my kitchen came from this site: http://www.southernaccents.com/accents/homes/architecture/article/0,14743,1174487,00.html You can type in "vintage modern kitchen" in google and it will come up. I can't load pictures because they are not mine :( I have not picked a sink, facuet, paint color, or flooring. The inspiration pics show a dark wood flooring, but that's too much dark for my small kitchen. I was thinking a grey tile/travertine but I wanted to pick the your brain for ideas. What color(s)/materials should I be leaning to for the floor? And what about paint colors? Thanks for your input!

When you say "stain" how dark are you talking about? I have a friend who stained her oak floors pretty dark, and EVERY crumb shows. It's a PITA. She regrets it. One of the best things about natural oak floors is that they don't show dirt, that is, unless you stain them dark. As others have noted, some finishes can change the oak color if sun hits it. My kitchen faces north, with trees blocking most of the light, so I don't worry about my unstained natural oak floors - they were last finished 7 years ago and look the same now as they did then. But if your kitchen has, e.g., a south-facing window, you should ask your floor guy what is the best preventative for color changing.

A flooring that sounds like it might fit that description is called Vintage Costa by Teka. It is an oil finish hardwood with wirebrush and scraping and features a brownish tone with some color variance. The Natura line from Florida tile is a fresh take on traditional wood flooring. It is a 6x24 inch porcelain tile that mimics the look of wood flooring without trying to be wood flooring.
