May need new dryer. Any recommendations pro or con?

My dryer drum is no longer revolving. The dryer was in the house when I bought it and it wasn't new so I am guessing is at least 20 years old. I will have my repairman look at it but I am thinking it is time for a new dryer. I don't need anything fancy and I am the only one in the household so it will only be used once a week or so. I am looking for any brands you would, or would not recommend. Current brand is maytag. I am open to any brand as long as it is reliable and reasonable cost. Thanks!

be careful of your space. If you are in a closet, some of the newer ones might be too large.

Speed queen is the only guy who makes an old fashioned, heavy duty machine. Otherwise dryers are pretty simple and all the others will work well enough.

Thanks! I have a laundry room in the basement so there should be plenty of room, although I will measure the door before I go shopping. I primarily want to avoid anything that has a bad track record as this one has held up well for me for the 15 years I have lived in this house.

THANK YOU for thinking of the health and happiness of your fish, and being honest about what you can manage. I wish more people would! (And yes, I do think there must be a fishy equivalent of "happiness" that they experience.) There are discussions all the time here about minimum gallons per koi to allow etc. and yes it may be true that you can technically keep them healthy with not a lot of space, if the filtration is adequate.... but I always wonder WHY BOTHER if there's not enough room for them to move freely. To see a group of koi moving together in a school across a large pond is an AMAZING sight. You don't see that when they are cramped. Without enough space they just kind of dart around aimlessly or don't move much at all. Which brings me to goldfish. There are some bred especially for ponds with bright colors and long fins - some look exactly like koi - only they stay small 10-12 inches maybe. You can get that same schooling behavior in a lot less space.

Heartsland is the best choice for wall vent. It is closed normally and stops everything including air penetration and then opens during use. Also does not trap lint for dryer vent. To make it look nicer, paint it the same color as the wall its on. I have one for a bathroom vent and one for a dryer vent (each originating in the basement). My vents for the main floor go out the roof (kitchen and bath). I installed a draft blocker in the vent line for the roof vents. The draft blocker was in the dryer vent section, but it is better to just use the heartland for the dryer and you don't need a draft blocker when using a heartland anyhow. I wouldn't really trust a draft blocker inline in a dryer vent anyhow would probably catch lint.

Don't necessarily want to get into technical detail "debate" but Loewen claims to use Coastal Douglas Fir. The April 2010 Forest Service labs Woodhandbook (http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/fplgtr/fpl_gtr190.pdf) does NOT test vertical grain DF as a category; Loewen website simply cites the handbook findings and seems to be in ballpark of accurate in claiming that their DF has better performance characteristics to Ponderosa Pine IF I am understanding things correctly. While I am interested in performance numbers and especially glazing performance, I am equally interested in forum "expert" opinions on functionality, customer experience, warranty service, etc. Thanks for any other input. And yes I will seek out looking at more things live, but while that is what I see and touch, it is what is under the hood that probably will have greatest influence on long term satisfaction. Added via edit, and in case like me you need a resource that describes in plain English what some of the measurements mean and in what circumstances they might be important you might find this page valuable the table on that page(http://workshopcompanion.com/KnowHow/Design/Nature_of_Wood/3_Wood_Strength/3_Wood_Strength.htm) also supports claim that DF is stronger than PP.

I should have said that they don't have mechanical brakes that trigger when the motor stops driving the drum. Some may have "electrical" braking via the motor but it's not instantaneous and unlikely to prevent a catastrophic failure. Majority nowadays don't have physical bump switches that the drum impacts when oscillating (the "old-style" Maytag Neptunes do have bump switches, probably some others from that time-frame). Balance sensing is by monitoring rotational inertia and characteristics during the slow-RPM load distribution routine. Catastrophic failure of the drum or drum support stops the machine ... the drum can't turn if it's jammed. The control would/should sense the high-current or lack of rotational sensor feedback and shut the motor off but probably not in a way that would prevent damage from occurring. There's not a lot can be done if the drum breaks loose from the support spider at 1,000 RPM+. Maybe (hopefully?) someone will reply to advise in the contrary! My Neptune TL has a device (I believe it's called an accelerometer) on the control board in the console that can sense the vibration if the drum impacts the cabinet. It comes into play during the distribution routine at start of spin. Max spin speed is limited to 500 RPM if an impact occurs at any point during distribution, even it if redistributes and gets a perfectly balanced spin. The sensor remains active during spin on the Bulky cycle but not on other cycles best as I can determine. However, it definitely does not have a spin brake, takes a long time for the heavy drum to coast-down.

Assuming the motor and heat are operating, the cause of a non-rotating drum is likely a broken belt. Not uncommon that the idler pulley is worn which contributed to the broken belt. Very simple and inexpensive fix in majority of cases.

Size (height, width and depth as the newer machines are all around bigger), gas or electric, door swing (from left or from right or downward), venting options (I recently moved my dryer -the new vent is 1'-and drying time fell by 50%), time and sensor drying, reverse tumble ...I would take the time to find out what the high, medium and low temperatures are-for awhile there manufacturers had marked the machines to show three temoeratures but really only had two....no "high" as this was their concession to conservation...some of the newer machines are cavernous and really can't dry small loads they just roll into a ball-you will only find that info from reading reviews from actual users. Unlike washers where there has been a lot of bad press re reliability for most manufacturers, dryers seem to be reliable but you need it to be reliable and to have the features you need.

I hope it is a simple and inexpensive fix Dadoes. I believe the motor is running as it makes noise and there is heat as the clothes were a little dry but the drum wasn't moving.
Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks practigal. Will try and do some additional research if it isn't an easy fix and I need a new one.
