Where to put glasses in a upper cabinet free kitchen?

Greetings -

Starting to work through a more detailed view of our kitchen as it relates to cabinets/layout/what we will store where.

My question is that I'm game for drawers to hold the dishes and plates. Had that in my last house and it was great (especially with kids who help,unload the dishwasher). But where would you put glasses if we decided to remove all uppers on that wall. In the past they were put in an upper cabinet above the dishwasher. Curios as to what other do?

I started thinking about it as I read Red-Argyle's post as We have a long wall (similar to Red-argyle recent thread) that will have a range top/sink and dishwasher on the this wall. There is an aisle across from this wall.

glasses and mugs work well in drawers, it's just a matter of retraining folks. We stored our plates and bowls in drawers in our last house for 7 years and my parents--who visit frequently--always looked for them in the upper cabinet first :-)

I just looked at Janel Beals' instragram account (it might be 'house of fifty') and she has no uppers. Opposite her upper-cabinet-free sink/range wall, she has open pantry shelves with her glassware. It's beautiful! She is a talented designer. If I had open shelves like hers they would not look as amazing; I cannot have open shelves.

illini girl, it will look fine! Having looked again at a bazillion Houzz kitchens and finished kitchens on Pinterest with the glass upper-uppers lit, and UCL, I'm noticing how much the color of the light affects the overall look. I've elected not to have my upper-uppers (which are glass on the range wall and half glass half solid on my refrig wall) not lit. I like the left drawing better, with the short glass cabs. I don't know what you are wanting to display, but maybe you can check whether they would still fit okay with the puck lights? It just seems more "finished" to have doors instead of cubbies. My house gets very dusty, too, and I would not want to have to pull out a stepstool to dust frequently, but neither would I want dusty lights, shelves, or display items! I'm thinking of having glass doors on short uppers myself, so I may be biased here. I just think glass, whether clear or reeder or whatnot, will draw the eye upward and help the room seem taller, and looks lovely.

My DW opens south toward the north end of the island, which is quite close, but the glasses go in the end cabinet in the east side of the island, which is still convenient to the sink. Cups are there also, because the coffeemaker is directly opposite on the west kitchen wall opposite the east side of the island. It's quite convenient as long as you stand at the west (left) side of the DW to unload them. Silverware, dishes, and pots and pans are unloaded from the right side into cabinets that direction. Wouldn't change a thing.

in the past, when possible, I've replaced the clear glass inserts with textured clear glass in my upper display cabs. Typically stained glass is about 1/8" when flat; no ripples, ridges, etc. It works out fine. You can get from any local stained glass supply store; they'd prolly cut to size for you too. Sorry, no comments on the glass shelf, other than find one at the big box store, compare and measure the thickness, polished edges, etc for your custom one. My glasses are in wall-depth cabinets, glass doors, at the end of the island.

Thanks GWers -. I looked for some pictures to help me visualize. There were not a lot available.

I'm afraid they may fall over when you take a few out? Maybe some dividers or go with heavy solid glasses upside down and the wine glasses in the butler pantry.

I had the same concern with breakable glasses/mugs so I put a rubber shelf liner in those drawers.

Not pretty necessarily but it works great for me.

In the kids' cup drawer, I wasn't concerned with them falling and breaking so they just sit in there.

Surprisingly, they don't normally fall over. Every once in a while when one of the kids yanks the drawer open or shoves it shut I have some fall.

I have a pantry closet with fixed shelf I use for the glassware. Pantry closets are the corollary of no uppers IMO

I have shelves on the wall beside the fridge which makes grabbing a glass and drink super functional. Overflow glasses are kept in a drawer near the DW and coffee mugs are near the coffee maker.

I have a question. Personally I would be quite happy with no wall cabinets at all since I am just a wee bit over 5 feet tall. What do those of you who share your home with tall family members do? DH is over six feet (along with a tricky back) and so are all the other men in our family including in-laws. Actually I and a mother in law (5"4" or so) are the only ones under 5"8" among the women. So are all those tall people expected to crouch down low to get a water glass? How do you make the area functional for everyone, not just the shorter adults and kids?

Drawer. No lining. Minimal shifting (Blum soft close/good hinges). Middle drawer in bank to the right of cleanup sink.

for my pint glasses, for maximum real estate, I alternate them:

- Row 1: facing up, facing down, facing up

- Row 2: facing down, facing up, facing down,

etc. so that they're packed in there pretty snug, so no movement at all.

Here's mine: Amanda's pint glasses in a drawer

The Ikea shelving mats also help thing stay stationary.
