Cabinet questions--where or where not to put glass

I've learned so much from gw, and we're just about ready to start building our home. I've planned where almost everything will go thanks to the uber planners here who have shared their ideas, and particularly Buehl. I have a couple of questions, though, and Boxerpups may be able to help with her fabulous selection of photos. The 15" upper cabs or cubbies, whichever we choose, will be used for display only. They will be lighted with puck lights. I'm thinking if we have glass doors there will be very little space for displays to be seen although I love that look. The glass in the doors will be 8" square and the stiles are 2.5". If we go with cubbies, they'll be the same wood as the rest of the kitchen. Perimeter cabs will be light and island will be dark. I'd love to have opinions and/or photos to help me visualize one or the other. I've looked at kitchen books until my eyes water. I'm also thinking of breaking up all the solid wood with an obsure/frosted/reeded glass door above the appliance garage. I've posted pix of both options. Opinions? Disregard my poor drawing of drawers in the island. I was just playing and I'm by no means an artist! Rest of house is very open.

I like the left drawing better, with the short glass cabs. I don't know what you are wanting to display, but maybe you can check whether they would still fit okay with the puck lights? It just seems more "finished" to have doors instead of cubbies. My house gets very dusty, too, and I would not want to have to pull out a stepstool to dust frequently, but neither would I want dusty lights, shelves, or display items!
I'm thinking of having glass doors on short uppers myself, so I may be biased here. I just think glass, whether clear or reeder or whatnot, will draw the eye upward and help the room seem taller, and looks lovely.

Thanks palimpsest. Placement in the lower cabinets seems to be inconvenient to me, maybe it wouldn't be, I just imagine it being. I am not sure what you mean by a tall cabinet where fridge is. Where would the fridge go? I have considered putting the fridge next to the ovens, and shifting everything down (losing a 30" DB and 33"upper) but didn't think like that as much. I like the door cabinet in the island idea. I've considered putting a cabinet with the back against the refrig, opening up towards the pass thru opening. Does that sound reasonable? I know I will be carrying glasses from the D/W to the cabinet, I thought that would be a better option than having to get a glass then walk across the room the the fridge.

They're both good plans. Because I'm av height, those upper shelves are mostly off-topic storage, so I'd use the view #1 as a way to show off something, like vases or party pitchers. But...the corner cupboard #2 would hold _a lot_ of stuff; if it's attractive, like glassware, and if that's actually a sensible spot for glassware go for it. But if the corner is a working countertop area, I'm not sure what I would store above it that I want the world to see.

We have two 12" deep cabinets under the island (24" deep drawers backed by the 12" cabs). I told the designer he was crazy that I'd never use them. He told me I'd love them. He wins! I love them. One has glasses, cups, plastic kid stuff, water bottles, etc etc.... The other has lunch boxes, coolers, and all of the assorted things that go in them. Next to the stove we have a small upper cabinet that has some nicer glasses (tall beer glasses, etc..) and random mugs in it. The coffee mugs we use every day are above the coffee & tea makers. Wine glasses are in a cabinet next to the fridge with the wine. I wound up splitting up my old huge corner glasses cabinet into 4 places in the new kitchen and it makes so much more sense. Nothing is buried way in the back and everything is where we use it.
