Well. I think it would look weird but I'm not a big fan of sheers acting as window coverings. I would probably leave the window bare. However, if you don't want to do that but want something decorative how about side panels that bring some of the outdoors inside. Without knowing the rest of the colour scheme in the room perhaps something with some green, if you have something that flowers, maybe something with the colour of the flower in it.

tibbrix -- that is a very nice look, I've seen it for other adjacent corner windows and I think it can work really well. I just don't see how it could work for our windows, there is no space on the outside edges for panel (which is why I have those inside mount rods).

Do you think it would be fine for inside-mount as well? If I did this, I would still cut my sheers in half (making them narrower but increasing them from 2 to 4). I don't want to spend any money on these windows right now, in the next year we're re-doing the whole room, change paint and some new furniture.

Maybe I could just push the to the corner but not tie them around each other?

Blfenton -- the view out these windows isn't that great, to be honest the light they let in isn't that great, either. The one by the fireplace faces east so we get sunshine for part of the morning. The adjacent window faces south, but is covered by our patio so it really doesn't provide much light. I could hang a plant in that corner, I think there is a ceiling hook. I like your idea of going with a color that brings the outside in...there is some purple clematis on the fence with great flowers, purple curtains might be really cool in the windows (something skinny, maybe partitioned the way tibbrix suggested).

Maybe I will come back to this issue when I re-do the room, I was just hoping there was an easier way to get a "mod" look with sheers.

Yes, I meant inside mount, obviously because of the corner. I think it can definitely work because of the lightness of sheers. With the windows open, they'll blow beautifully, which is really the beauty of sheers, IMO.

You could probably also do two on the outside of each window and one in the corner. That I think would give it a more modern look and give the illusion of the entire corner being glass, which is very modern.

Another thought which probably isn't quite as modern is using tie-backs to each side. You would need to put in a small hook on each side and then you could use purple ribbons. If you wanted to hang a plant it would nicely frame it.
I can see why you don't want to spend any money if you're redoing the room. I agree, work with what you have to bring a little bit of change. Have fun working with it.

I must be the only person on these boards who has ALL window treatments attached to the window trim. That is the way that I have always done it....and so did everybody else that I knew.

It was only when decorating shows appeared on TV that I ever saw them attached to the walls. So....you can buy curtain rods and brackets for practically nothing, attach them to the window trim corners, and hang your sheers.

I would use one panel per window and add a second rod at the bottom and shirr the panels over each window, top and bottom. Esp if the view isn't that great. It will add brightness and softness and hide the view. Looks like you'll need to shorten the panels though to get it done.

Have you considered just using bamboo roman shades by themselves? If you do not wan to do that I would try putting hooks as mentioned and opening them and hanging them on the hook.

Or put the hooks on each side and use roman shades.

I like all these ideas!!! I like that sheers provide some daytime privacy while letting in light, and they are so simple and inexpensive, but they just don't offer much in the way of substance, which I feel like those corner windows require.

atkillery9 -- I like the look of Roman shades, but I want to stop using mine for a couple reasons:

1 - most of the light comes through the top of the windows, which is blocked whether they are open or closed

2 - they are difficult to use because I think they are designed for outside mount and hung on a rod. Raising or lowering is a PITA because you have to reach behind the blind, pull it away from the window, then raise or lower with the cord, and manually lock it into place (but since I rarely lower them I figured it was okay, I think I bought them on clearance 8 years ago and we had to cut them down and do a few other things to make them fit ... they aren't even long enough for the windows they end about 2 or 3" short at the bottom). And, when I do let them down, then it's a big ordeal to raise them up to the same heights again due to having to manually lock them into place.

When the blind fell down, I realized that I don't need these crazy jerry-rigged blinds in my life. I'm tired of fussing with them and I really want to let more light into the room.

AnnieD -- Your idea would be great for a stationary window, but for mine both the bottom and top can be opened and I often open/shut. In fact, with the Roman shades off altogether it's much easier to open the top window!

For now they are just stacked toward the corner, which I can live with. I like it better than when I had them tied together. When we re-do the room, I'm going to go with the idea to add some color with panels; I'll make some room-darkening panels for the window. At first I was thinking to outside-mount them over the sheers, but I guess I will make a decision about that once I start re-doing the room. I'll try to see if I can find inspiration pics online to help me decide. The main thing, for my DH, is that he wants to be able to darken the room sometimes.

I think your idea with the panels both pulled to the center is a good idea.

Concerning hemming curtains:

After always hemming at the bottom hem and trying to get the curtains to hang right after disturbing the original hem, I had the idea to hem my expensive curtains at the top. This kept the original hem in tack and they still hung very nicely. Also, you don't have to be so fussy about it, especially if there is a valance. They were shirred on a rod, so it wasn't noticible. The reason I mentioned they were expensive is that I hesitated taking out the hem, nasty job, and curtains never seem to hang as nice.

For a more modern look, I would hang attractive curtain rods on the wall near the ceiling above the windows which would make the window treatments look more important. Instead of shirred on a tension rod, look for either tab tops, grommets, or something else that gives the look of pleats or folds in the fabric. Hanging from above the window will make opening and shutting the window easier because there is not rod blocking access.

It's unfortunate that you don't have room on either side of the windows for the fabric to hang on either side of the window - but I would get enough fabric that if pulled across the window would cover the window in a lightweight sheer fabric that won't take too much room when pushed to the side. You can use a simple tie back to hold the fabric to one side, but keep the fabric hanging straight down.

Is it possible to pull them to the outside ? They would frame the window nicely. You could also add a trim down the sides to add a little finish.

I'm still trying different curtain positions, but I think the biggest issue is that the sheers just don't offer much visual weight. I hadn't considered adding trim on the sides, I like that idea!

The rods in the windows aren't tension rods, I forget what they're called but the rod holders are screwed to the frame and the rods rest in the holders. I do think part of the issue is that they are shirred, not on rings or anything interesting. I could get rings when/if I make more substantial curtains; I like that rings make them easier to draw closed.

alexamorrie -- how high would you hang outside curtains? The ceiling of the fireplace wall is vaulted, with the apex centered over the fireplace.

You could hang the rods midway between the window frame and the height of the ceiling at the corner. That would take out any rise in the ceiling as a result of the vault.

I was thinking of suggesting that as well but wasn't sure what was available in rods that wouldn't look crowded in the corner. There are curtain rod corner connectors (they're like an elbow pipe connector) but I have never used them.

I'm not sure that sewing trim along the sides of the curtain will work because of the difference in weights. BUT, what you could do is add some trim along the bottom which would allow the curtains to hang heavier but evenly weighted. Or you could add curtain weights.
